Odisha Govt Sounds Alarm on Insurance Mis-Selling: Calls for Trust Revival

Odisha pushes for transparent, affordable insurance to protect citizens and support small businesses

The Odisha government has taken a firm stance against insurance companies using misleading sales tactics, emphasizing the need for transparency and consumer protection. At the second state-level insurance committee meeting, officials called out practices that leave policyholders frustrated and wary of the system.

Cracking Down on Shady Practices

Development Commissioner Deo Ranjan Kumar Singh criticized insurance companies for selling policies under false pretenses. “People buy one thing but get another, and when they need help, they are left stranded,” Singh said, highlighting why trust in insurance has declined.

The government is now urging companies to adopt honest marketing practices and ensure that customers clearly understand their policies.

Empowering Citizens with Knowledge

Beyond holding insurers accountable, the committee discussed ways to educate the public on filing claims and understanding payouts. Focus is being placed on affordability and accessibility, especially for weavers, artisans, and other underserved groups who often struggle to access proper insurance coverage.

Customized Solutions for Vulnerable Groups

Officials also emphasized tailored insurance schemes for people in disaster-prone areas and strategies to support small and medium businesses. Digital tools, enhanced field worker training, and outreach programs aim to bring insurance services closer to citizens in both urban and rural areas.

High-Level Participation

The meeting included top officials and representatives from the insurance industry:

  • Sanjeev Kumar Mishra, Finance Department Principal Secretary

  • Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, Handlooms Secretary

  • Satyajit Tripathi, IRDAI

  • Representatives from LIC, Bharti AXA Life, Shriram General, Zurich Kotak General, and others

This diverse participation reflects the government’s commitment to making insurance effective and trustworthy for all.

Aiming for Trust and Security

The Odisha government’s ultimate goal is a reliable insurance system that protects jobs, provides financial security, and serves citizens when life takes unpredictable turns. Officials insist that transparency, accessibility, and affordability must become the foundation of the state’s insurance framework.
