The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department has launched a public awareness campaign to address growing smartphone addiction and its impact on mental health. The department has urged people to adopt a “Digital Detox” and reduce excessive dependence on mobile phones.
As part of the initiative, people have been encouraged to take up the “One Hour Without Phone” challenge. The campaign aims to discourage the habit of checking mobile phones immediately after waking up and promote reduced screen time throughout the day.
Health officials have highlighted several warning signs of excessive mobile phone use. These include spending long hours unnecessarily scrolling through phones, repeatedly checking notifications, and feeling restless or anxious when the phone is not nearby or cannot be used.
Excessive smartphone use can also interfere with daily life, including studies, work and sleep. The department has advised people to begin practising digital detox habits from today and maintain a healthier balance between online and offline life.
For mental health-related assistance or counselling, people can contact the free Tele-MANAS helpline at 14416, the department said.
Meanwhile, Odisha has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of mobile subscribers. According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the state added 4,12,399 new mobile subscribers in July alone, making it the second-highest increase in the country during the month.
With the latest addition, the total number of mobile subscribers in Odisha has risen to 3,90,14,287. The state’s teledensity has also crossed the 85 per cent mark and currently stands at 85.21 per cent.
The rapid growth in mobile connectivity has brought digital services closer to people, but health experts are increasingly raising concerns about excessive screen time and smartphone dependence.
