Odisha Holds High-Level Review Meeting on Heatwave Preparedness

Odisha Government Launches Comprehensive Measures to Protect Citizens from Extreme Heat and Ensure Public Safety During Upcoming Heatwave

The Revenue and Disaster Management Minister of Odisha, Shri Suresh Pujari, chaired a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan to discuss preparedness for the upcoming summer heatwave. The session focused on measures to ensure public safety and minimize the adverse impact of extreme heat conditions across the state.

Public Safety Top Priority

Minister Pujari emphasized that safeguarding human life is the government’s top priority during the impending heatwave. Departments were instructed to take proactive measures to ensure continuous water and electricity supply, and to implement strict operational protocols for workers engaged in physical labor. Special attention will be given to vulnerable groups, including schoolchildren and laborers.

Model Cooling Centers and Special Arrangements

The meeting outlined arrangements for model cooling shelters in affected areas. Authorities were directed to provide drinking water, shaded areas, and medical aid where necessary. Schools, hospitals, and other public institutions were asked to implement additional safety measures, including separate drinking water facilities for children. Measures for maintaining temporary seating and shade in crowded public places were also discussed.

Coordinated Government Response

District Collectors were empowered to take immediate action within their jurisdictions to ensure smooth coordination between departments during extreme heat events. The Revenue and Disaster Management Department, along with other concerned departments, will maintain continuous monitoring and public awareness campaigns to minimize risks to citizens.

Power Supply and Essential Services

Special instructions were issued to the Energy Department to maintain uninterrupted power supply, particularly during peak summer days, while taking steps for energy conservation. Citizens were advised to report power issues through helpline numbers, with assurances that complaints will be addressed promptly.

Focus on Vulnerable Regions

Specific arrangements were planned for heatwave-prone districts including Jharsuguda, Brajarajnagar, Anugul, and Talcher. Measures include setting up cooling shelters, ensuring bus services with temperature control, and providing safe drinking water. Efforts were also planned to make urban and semi-urban areas greener by utilizing vacant government land for afforestation and shade.

Awareness Campaigns

The government directed that regular updates and awareness programs be conducted through mass media and other communication channels. These efforts aim to educate the public about heatwave safety and ensure coordinated action across departments for effective management of the crisis.

Officials Present: The meeting included senior officials from the Revenue & Disaster Management Department, Energy Department, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, Education and Public Awareness Departments, as well as all RDCs, District Collectors, and Municipal Commissioners participating via video conferencing.
