The issue of a recent salary hike for Odisha legislators has triggered intense political debate, with growing public discontent forcing the ruling party to reconsider the decision. Following criticism from various quarters, BJP MLAs have urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to review the hike, citing public sentiment.
BJP MLAs Meet Chief Minister After Key Meeting
After a crucial meeting of the BJP Legislature Party on Thursday, ruling party MLAs met the Chief Minister and demanded a reconsideration of the decision to increase MLAs’ salaries and allowances. The development comes amid widespread criticism and negative public reaction to the move.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling confirmed the development, stating that the Chief Minister has been apprised of the concerns. He said the demand was made in keeping with public opinion and respect for people’s sentiments, adding that the step reflects the government’s sensitivity to public concerns.
Salary and Allowances Tripled Under Passed Bill
It may be recalled that during the winter session of the Odisha Assembly on December 9, the House unanimously passed a bill to enhance the salaries and allowances of MLAs. Following the amendment, the total monthly salary and allowances of legislators were raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹3.45 lakh, amounting to nearly a threefold increase.
The bill also provided for an increase in the pension of former MLAs, which further added to the controversy surrounding the decision.
Public Backlash and Opposition Reaction
The salary hike sparked strong public backlash, with citizens questioning the timing and scale of the increase. Opposition parties also strongly criticised the move.
Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote to the Chief Minister stating that he would not accept the enhanced salary, urging the government to reconsider the decision in view of public sentiment.
Government’s Next Move Under Watch
With BJP legislators themselves seeking a review, political observers are closely watching whether the Odisha government will withdraw or amend the salary hike decision. The issue has now become a major political flashpoint, with public opinion likely to play a decisive role in shaping the government’s next step.
