Mutton continues to remain one of the most preferred non-vegetarian foods among people in Odisha. However, recent data presented in the state assembly highlights a significant gap between the demand and production of mutton, poultry meat, and eggs in the state. The figures reveal that while consumption is rising steadily, local production is still struggling to fully meet the growing demand.
Daily Demand for Meat and Eggs
According to information shared in the state assembly by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik, Odisha requires a substantial quantity of animal protein products every day.
The state’s daily requirement includes:
-
0.34 thousand metric tonnes of mutton
-
0.84 thousand metric tonnes of chicken
-
138.36 lakh eggs
These figures clearly show the high consumption of non-vegetarian food among people in Odisha. Among these, mutton holds a special place in the food culture, particularly during festivals, family gatherings, and weekends.
Current Production in the State
Despite the large demand, the production levels in Odisha are comparatively lower. The minister informed that the state currently produces:
-
0.30 thousand metric tonnes of mutton per day
-
0.38 thousand metric tonnes of chicken per day
-
117.4 lakh eggs daily
While mutton production is relatively close to the demand, poultry meat production is significantly lower than the required quantity, indicating a major supply gap. Egg production is also slightly below the daily demand.
This shortfall often leads to dependence on supply from other states, especially for poultry products. As a result, fluctuations in transportation costs and market prices can affect consumers in Odisha.
Government Efforts to Boost Production
To address the growing gap between demand and supply, the state government has been taking several initiatives to strengthen the livestock and poultry sectors. These efforts include encouraging farmers to adopt modern animal husbandry practices, improving veterinary services, and promoting poultry farming across rural areas.
Various schemes under the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department are also aimed at increasing livestock productivity and improving farmers’ income. By supporting goat rearing and poultry farming, the government hopes to reduce dependence on external supply and make Odisha more self-sufficient in meat and egg production.
Cultural Importance of Mutton in Odisha
Mutton has a strong cultural connection with the people of Odisha. From traditional Sunday meals to special occasions and festivals, khasi mansa (goat meat) remains a favorite dish in many households. Its popularity continues to drive demand across urban and rural markets alike.
With rising income levels and changing food habits, experts believe that the demand for meat and eggs in Odisha will continue to grow in the coming years. Strengthening local production will therefore be crucial to ensuring stable supply and affordable prices for consumers.
