Concerns have intensified across North Odisha as a depression formed over the Bay of Bengal moves closer to the state, raising the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts.
The weather system, which developed near the West Bengal coast, is currently centred around 190 km from Baripada. According to the weather department’s assessment, the depression is likely to move gradually through West Bengal towards Jharkhand.
As the system moves inland, several parts of North Odisha are expected to experience increased rainfall activity. The situation has raised concerns over waterlogging, rising river and stream levels and possible disruption to road communication in vulnerable areas.
Red Alert for Sundargarh, Keonjhar
A Red Alert has been issued for Sundargarh and Keonjhar districts, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected.
Authorities have warned that intense rainfall could lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas and a rapid rise in water levels in rivers and streams. There is also a possibility of localised flooding and disruption of communication in vulnerable locations.
Other districts across North Odisha are also likely to receive prolonged rainfall under the influence of the depression.

The weather department is closely monitoring the movement and intensity of the depression. District administrations have also been advised to remain prepared for possible rainfall-related emergencies and flooding.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. People living near rivers, streams and low-lying areas have been advised to follow local administration advisories.
