Odisha to Introduce Eco-Friendly EV Boats at Major Tourist Destinations

OTDC Floats Tender to Replace Diesel Boats With Eco-Friendly EV Boats at Hirakud, Chilika, Bhitarkanika and Other Tourist Spots

Odisha Tourism Set for Green Transformation

Odisha is set to begin a new chapter in its tourism sector with the introduction of eco-friendly EV boats at major water-based tourist destinations across the state.

Keeping in view rising fuel costs and increasing pollution caused by conventional diesel boats, the Odisha government has decided to replace traditional boats with electric-powered vessels. The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has already floated tenders for the project.

EV Boats to Be Introduced in First Phase at Five Locations

In the first phase, diesel boats operating at five key tourist destinations in Odisha will be converted into EV boats.

According to the plan:

  • A 30-seater electric boat will operate at Kolab in Koraput district.
  • Two electric boats with capacities of 20 and 10 seats respectively will be introduced at Hirakud in Sambalpur.
  • A 20-seater EV boat will operate in Bhitarkanika, Kendrapara.
  • An 8-seater luxury EV boat will be introduced at Barkul in Chilika, Khordha district.

Solar and CNG Support for Better Sustainability

The upcoming boats will not only run on electric power but will also include facilities for solar energy and CNG support to ensure better sustainability and uninterrupted service.

The initiative aims to improve tourist safety, comfort, and environmental protection while reducing fuel expenses and water pollution in ecologically sensitive areas.

Government Expanding EV Usage Across Odisha

Apart from tourism, the Odisha government is also planning to promote electric vehicles across various government departments.

From panchayat offices to block, tehsil, and district-level administrations, EV vehicles are expected to be used extensively in the coming days. The government has also decided not to use new diesel or petrol rental vehicles for official purposes in the future.

EV Vehicles to Run Inside Utkal University Campus

The government has also taken a decision to introduce EV vehicles inside the campus of Utkal University at Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar.

The move is aimed at creating a pollution-free and environmentally friendly campus while promoting clean transportation practices.

Government Focused on Sustainable Tourism

Tourism Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said the Odisha government is giving special emphasis to making the state’s tourism industry more modern and environment-friendly.

She stated that replacing diesel boats with EV boats would significantly reduce fuel costs and lower pollution levels in water bodies and surrounding areas.

The government also plans to gradually expand EV boat services to more tourist destinations across Odisha in the future.
