Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Slovakia on Monday and received a warm and ceremonial welcome in the capital city of Bratislava. The visit marks a historic milestone, as Modi becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993.
First-Ever Visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia
Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Upon his arrival in Bratislava, he was welcomed by Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár.
The visit is expected to open new avenues of cooperation between India and Slovakia across a range of sectors, including trade, investment, innovation, automobile manufacturing, and railway development.
High-Level Bilateral Talks Scheduled
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. The leaders are expected to review existing partnerships and explore opportunities to deepen cooperation in strategic and economic sectors.
Officials from both sides have expressed optimism that the visit will further strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Colourful Cultural Welcome in Bratislava
Before the formal meetings, Prime Minister Modi was greeted with a vibrant cultural programme showcasing Slovakia’s rich heritage, folk music, and traditional dance performances.
One of the most memorable moments of the welcome ceremony came when Slovak artists performed “Vande Mataram,” India’s national song, in honour of the visiting Prime Minister. Modi later shared a video of the performance on social media, praising Slovakia for the warm gesture and describing it as a special moment.
Traditional Bread and Salt Ceremony
In keeping with Slovak tradition, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed not with a bouquet but with bread and salt, a centuries-old custom symbolizing hospitality, respect, friendship, and protection.
The ceremonial offering is considered one of the highest forms of welcome in Slovak culture and was presented as a mark of honour to the Indian leader.
Enthusiastic Response from Indian Diaspora
Members of the Indian community in Slovakia gathered in large numbers to welcome Prime Minister Modi. The visit generated considerable excitement among the Indian diaspora, many of whom expressed pride in witnessing the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country.
Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged and appreciated the contributions of the Indian community in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Slovakia.
Strengthening India-Slovakia Partnership

With growing economic opportunities and shared interests in innovation and technology, both countries are looking to build a stronger and more comprehensive partnership in the years ahead.
