Drama Off-Stage: Tulasi Gananatya Star Sai Faces Danger, Mother Files FIR

Mother alleges threats and mental harassment against popular yatra performer

A controversy has shaken Odisha’s yatra (open-air theatre) circuit after Padmini Dash, mother of noted performer Sai Satyajit Panda, filed a police complaint alleging threats and severe mental harassment against her son. The complaint, lodged at the Balipatna police station, names Nandu Babu, owner of the yatra troupe Tulasi Gananatya.

According to the FIR, Sai’s life is allegedly in danger due to continued intimidation and harassment.

Alleged Threats and Intimidation by Troupe Members

In her complaint, Padmini Dash claimed that hired goons were sent to threaten her son, causing him extreme psychological distress. She alleged that the harassment escalated over time and that repeated intimidation left Sai fearful for his safety.

Citing these concerns, the family has withdrawn Sai from the ongoing Khadagiri Mela, stating that he will not perform there again.

Contract Dispute and Growing Tensions

Sai Satyajit Panda, known for portraying villainous roles and performing dangerous snake-handling acts on stage, joined Tulasi Gananatya in August last year under a one-year contract. Sources close to the artist said tensions intensified after the start of this year’s fair season.

They allege that Sai was subjected to constant bullying and mental pressure by certain individuals associated with the troupe, creating a hostile working environment.

Collapse and Hospitalisation Raise Alarm

The situation reportedly took a dramatic turn on Sunday night when Sai collapsed and lost consciousness. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors treated him for what his family described as a severe mental breakdown.

Relatives said his condition remains serious and that prolonged stress and fear contributed to his collapse.

Spotlight on the Dark Side of Yatra Culture

The incident has brought renewed attention to the often unseen pressures within Odisha’s yatra industry. While the performances captivate large audiences, backstage rivalries, power struggles, and alleged intimidation are said to be an open secret within the circuit.

Sai’s sudden exit has shocked fans and fellow performers, prompting wider questions about the safety and mental well-being of artists working in the highly competitive yatra ecosystem.

Police Assure Investigation

Balipatna police officials confirmed that they have received the complaint and said an investigation is underway. They added that appropriate action will be taken after verifying the allegations and recording statements from all parties involved.

As the probe continues, the case has sparked a broader debate on accountability and protection for performers, with many asking how secure artists truly are behind the spotlight.
