Sanju Samson produced a stunning performance to lead India national cricket team to their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, earning the Player of the Tournament award despite playing only five matches. His spectacular run with the bat silenced critics and became the backbone of India’s record-breaking campaign.
Samson’s Record-Breaking Performance
The Kerala wicketkeeper-batter scored a staggering 321 runs at an average of 80.25, with a phenomenal strike rate of 199.37. He smashed 24 sixes, the most in the tournament, and surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the highest runs by an Indian in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.
Initially benched for India’s first four games due to a poor T20I series against New Zealand national cricket team, Samson was brought back after India’s loss to South Africa national cricket team. From that point, he delivered match-defining innings:
-
22 vs Namibia
-
24 vs Zimbabwe
-
97 vs West Indies* (must-win to secure semifinals)
-
89 vs England (semifinal victory)
-
89 off 46 balls vs New Zealand in the final, including five fours and eight sixes
Historic Final at Narendra Modi Stadium
In the final, India posted a record 255/5, setting a daunting target for New Zealand. The bowlers then stepped up, with Jasprit Bumrah delivering a devastating 4/15, as New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, giving India a commanding 96-run victory.
This triumph marked India’s first successful title defense and their third overall T20 World Cup win.
Samson Reflects on His Journey
Looking back at his journey, Samson said, “My dream has come true. I am very happy that I have achieved this award. Since I started thinking about performing well and winning a tournament for my team from the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, I have been thinking about it. After the New Zealand series, my batting form was poor, which dealt a deep blow to my dreams…but somehow I got an opportunity…and this miracle happened.”
He also credited guidance from Sachin Tendulkar during his lean patch, saying it helped him regain confidence and form.
National Pride and Recognition
Despite the ICC Player of the Tournament honour coming without a cash prize, Samson’s resurgence has cemented his status as a clutch performer for India. His spectacular innings inspired the team’s campaign and ignited pride across the nation, making him one of the defining stars of the T20 World Cup.
