Scorching Heat Grips Odisha from Early April, Coastal Humidity Adds to Discomfort

Yellow Warning Issued as Coastal Humidity and Rising Temperatures Intensify Heatwave Conditions

Intense Heatwave Conditions Across the State
Odisha is witnessing an intense spell of heat from the very beginning of April, with soaring temperatures and unbearable humidity making daily life difficult. The situation has become so severe that stepping out between 11 AM and 3 PM feels extremely uncomfortable, with people experiencing intense heat exposure.

Coastal Districts Reel Under High Humidity
Coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur are facing severe discomfort due to high humidity levels ranging between 70% and 80%. Even though temperatures are only about 1°C above normal, the moisture in the air is trapping heat, resulting in oppressive conditions.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow warning for these districts. According to Director Manorama Mohanty, the humid conditions are likely to persist for the next two days.

Western Odisha Sizzles Above 40°C
While coastal regions battle humidity, western Odisha is facing extreme heat, with temperatures crossing 40°C. Jharsuguda recorded a high of 40.6°C, while Titlagarh touched 40°C. Jharsuguda, known for its high temperatures, is already among the hottest places in the country and may break records again this year.

The intense heat has led to deserted streets after late morning hours, with people avoiding outdoor activities due to the fear of heatstroke.

Relief Expected with Kalbaisakhi Showers
There is a possibility of Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms bringing some relief in districts like Malkangiri and Koraput. However, overall temperature levels are expected to remain largely unchanged over the next three days, with a slight drop of 2–4°C likely afterward.

Health Advisory Issued for Public Safety
Authorities have advised people to stay hydrated and consume plenty of water and ORS to avoid heat-related illnesses. The risk of heatstroke is increasing, especially in western parts of the state.

School Timings Revised Amid Heatwave
In response to the extreme weather conditions, the state government has revised school timings. Classes will now be held from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM across Odisha. The School and Mass Education Department has issued directives to all district collectors to implement the changes immediately.

Rising Concern Over Prolonged Heatwave
With temperatures rising sharply at the start of April itself, concerns are growing that Odisha may witness a prolonged and severe summer this year. Authorities remain on alert as both heatwave and humidity continue to impact daily life across the state.
