A series of seven explosions struck the Jebel Ali Industrial Area, one of the United Arab Emirates’ most important industrial and commercial hubs, within a span of 20 minutes on Wednesday night, triggering panic and sending thick black smoke into the sky.
According to Emirati authorities and Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the explosions were powerful enough to be heard across nearby residential areas. Witnesses in Al Furjan, located close to Jebel Ali, said they heard multiple loud blasts in quick succession during the night.
Despite the intensity of the explosions, preliminary reports indicate that no deaths or injuries have been reported.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Dubai Police and other security agencies have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have also taken strict action against the circulation of unverified information on social media.
According to reports, two people have been arrested for allegedly recording videos of the explosions and sharing them on social media. Officials have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely only on official government statements.
Cause of Explosions Still Unknown
The exact cause of the explosions remains under investigation.
Some Iraqi media outlets claimed that the incident was linked to a missile attack launched from Yemen amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran. However, Emirati authorities have not confirmed those claims.
Meanwhile, thermal imaging data from NASA reportedly indicated a fire at a warehouse near the port. The facility was primarily used for fuel storage, raising questions over whether the incident was an industrial accident or the result of a deliberate attack.
Investigators are examining all possible angles to determine the cause.
Strategic Importance of Jebel Ali
Jebel Ali is home to Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, the world’s largest man-made harbour and one of the busiest shipping and logistics hubs globally. It also houses the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), a major international trade and industrial centre.
The UAE has already been on high alert because of escalating regional tensions involving the United States, Iran and Yemen, with the Gulf region remaining vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts.
