Shreemayee Mishra’s Facebook post sparks storm within the party : Who is the ‘Dhritarashtra’ in BJD?

“BJD leader Shreemayee Mishra likens Naveen to Dhritarashtra, Pandian to Duryodhana in explosive Facebook post.”

A Mahabharata Analogy

Senior BJD leader Shreemayee Mishra has triggered a political storm by posting a sharp Facebook note comparing the ruling party to the Kuru Sabha of the Mahabharata. In her post, she drew parallels between BJD’s current functioning and the silence of King Dhritarashtra, who, blinded by his love for son Duryodhana, failed to stop the injustice against Draupadi.

“History never forgives such unworthy kings,” she wrote, sparking speculation over whom she was targeting.

Whom Did She Mean?

Political observers believe Mishra’s post was a veiled attack on BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik and his close aide V.K. Pandian.

  • Naveen Patnaik is being compared to a blind Dhritarashtra, unable to check wrongdoings due to “blind affection.”

  • Pandian is being hinted at as Duryodhana, whose influence dominates party decisions.

The timing of Mishra’s post has added fuel to existing internal unrest within the BJD.

Ticket Denial Sparks Anger

Mishra’s resentment dates back to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when she was initially promised a ticket from Bhubaneswar. Party insiders confirm she was actively involved in campaigning with hopes of being nominated. However, at the last moment, her name was dropped and replaced by veteran leader Manmath Routray.

This sudden denial left Mishra humiliated, and she has since distanced herself from mainstream party activities despite holding the post of General Secretary in the BJD Women’s Wing.

Signs of Discontent Within BJD

Mishra’s outburst comes at a time when several senior BJD leaders have begun voicing dissent against Pandian’s growing clout in the party.

  • Leaders such as Ashok Panda, Debashish Samantaray, Raja Swain, and Arun Sahoo have openly expressed disapproval of Pandian’s dominance.

  • With Naveen Patnaik’s health concerns, the Pandian couple has reportedly tightened control over party affairs, leading to mounting dissatisfaction among veterans.

A Direct Challenge or Veiled Protest?

By invoking Dhritarashtra, Mishra has indirectly accused the party leadership of allowing “injustice through silence.” Analysts say this is her way of protesting the humiliation she faced and questioning the future direction of the party under Pandian’s influence.

Her remarks have now deepened debates about whether BJD is heading towards an internal power struggle.
