Good news for middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who will continue to hold his place in India’s T20 squad for the final two matches against New Zealand, following a delay in Tilak Varma’s comeback.
Tilak Varma Fully Recovered but Return Delayed
Tilak Varma, who recently underwent successful testicular torsion surgery after an injury at the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has now fully recovered and is pain-free. Originally, Tilak’s return was planned for the last two of the five T20Is, but BCCI officials have delayed his comeback to ensure he is absolutely fit for the T20 World Cup 2026.
BCCI Prioritizes World Cup Fitness
A BCCI official told the Times of India:
“Tilak is pain-free and has recovered, but the Center wants him to be fully prepared. The selectors would rather not take any risk, so his return is delayed. As he has prior match experience, he can directly join the World Cup.”
Tilak will now focus on practice matches in Mumbai to regain match fitness instead of playing in the fourth T20I.
Shreyas Iyer Benefits from Delay
As a result, Shreyas Iyer, brought in as Tilak’s replacement, will retain his spot in the squad for the final two T20Is. However, it remains uncertain whether he will get a game, especially after the opening three matches in the series have already rested some regular players.
India vs New Zealand T20 Series Outlook
With the series underway, India aims to maintain momentum and manage player fitness ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision to delay Tilak Varma’s return ensures that the team fields fully fit players in high-stakes tournaments while giving young talents like Shreyas Iyer a chance to prove their worth in international cricket.
