In a dramatic Independence Day ceremony at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law a massive $4.5 trillion tax and spending package dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The wide-ranging legislation marks one of the most ambitious policy overhauls of Trump’s second term, encompassing tax reforms, immigration enforcement, border security, social spending cuts, and defence priorities.

Major Legislative Win for Trump Administration

The bill narrowly passed the House of Representatives on July 3 by a margin of 218–214, after securing Senate approval earlier in the week. With Republicans holding majorities in both chambers, the legislation is considered a cornerstone of Trump’s second-term agenda.

At the signing event, President Trump hailed the bill as a transformative moment for the country. “America is winning like never before,” he declared. “This bill delivers on my promises—securing our borders, turbocharging our economy, and restoring the American dream.” He called it “the single most important piece of border legislation ever passed” and heralded the start of a “golden era for America.”

Tax Reforms and Middle-Class Relief

Among the headline provisions, the legislation permanently extends the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, delivering further tax relief for middle-income earners and businesses. It introduces new exemptions—including those for tips and overtime wages through 2028—and raises the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap to $40,000 over the next five years.

Border Security and Immigration Overhaul

One of the most controversial pillars of the bill is its aggressive funding for border security and immigration enforcement. Approximately $350 billion has been allocated to these measures, including $46.5 billion for extending the U.S.-Mexico border wall and $45 billion for constructing new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.

The law authorizes the hiring of 10,000 new ICE officers and 3,000 additional Border Patrol agents, with the goal of deporting over one million undocumented immigrants annually. It also introduces a historic $1,000 fee for asylum applications—the first of its kind in U.S. history.

Deep Cuts to Social Programs

To offset parts of the spending, the bill slashes $1.2 trillion from social safety net programs. Medicaid faces a $700 billion reduction, while the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see a $267 billion cut. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates these changes will result in 8.6 million people losing Medicaid coverage and 3 million being disqualified from food assistance due to stricter eligibility rules and new work requirements.

Defence Boost and Environmental Rollbacks

The legislation also includes a $150 billion increase in defence spending. Notably, $25 billion is earmarked for Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system. However, it simultaneously rolls back $488 billion in clean energy tax credits from the Biden era—a move strongly condemned by environmental groups and key industry figures.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the rollback “political suicide,” joining a growing chorus of criticism from environmental advocates who argue the cuts undermine climate progress.

Opposition Warns of Long-Term Consequences

Despite passing along party lines, the bill has sparked internal Republican dissent. Senators Thom Tillis and Rand Paul voiced concerns over its projected $3.3 trillion increase in national debt over the next decade. Critics also object to the trade-off between tax cuts and deep reductions in health and food aid.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez denounced the legislation as a “deal with the Devil,” accusing the administration of prioritizing tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.

Public sentiment also appears divided. A Quinnipiac University poll found that 53% of registered voters oppose the bill, while only 27% support it.

2026 Midterms Loom Over Implementation

As the Trump administration moves forward with enforcement and implementation, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is expected to shape the national political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterms. With sweeping changes in taxation, immigration, and welfare policy, the bill could redefine the contours of American domestic politics for years to come.
