Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced an ambitious target of making India drug-free by 2029, describing the fight against narcotics as the country’s next major national campaign after eliminating Naxalism.

Speaking at a press conference in Goa, Shah unveiled a three-year roadmap from July 2026 to July 2029, saying the campaign against drugs would be implemented in “mission mode” through coordinated efforts by central and state agencies.

Shah said the government has taken several measures against drug trafficking since 2019, focusing on dismantling trafficking networks and disrupting their financial infrastructure. According to him, the government made the fight against narcotics a national security priority in 2019.

As part of the strategy, a four-tier Narcotics Coordination Centre (NCORD) mechanism was established. Anti-narcotics task forces were also formed across all states and Union Territories to connect local police with the national strategy.

The Home Minister said enforcement has gradually shifted from seizure-focused operations to network-centric action. Investigating agencies have targeted not only drugs and their immediate handlers but also kingpins, associates, distributors and suppliers involved in trafficking networks.

Shah said the government has worked to ensure that the fight against narcotics is no longer limited to separate investigations or isolated action by individual agencies. Instead, it has been transformed into a coordinated and sustained national campaign.

The proposed roadmap for 2026–2029 will further strengthen cooperation between enforcement agencies, state governments and local police. The focus will remain on identifying major trafficking networks, disrupting their financial channels and taking action against those involved in the drug trade.

Shah described the campaign as a major national priority and expressed confidence that coordinated enforcement and sustained action would help India achieve the goal of becoming drug-free by 2029.

Monsoon Session Ends Amid Uproar Over NEET Issue and Student Protests

The Monsoon Session of Parliament concluded on Thursday with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die amid repeated disruptions over the NEET issue and police action against protesting students.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the productivity of the session remained low, with the Lok Sabha recording only 19% of scheduled work and the Rajya Sabha around 39%. He blamed the Congress for repeatedly disrupting proceedings and expressed disappointment over the quality of debates.

Addressing a press conference after the adjournment of both Houses, Rijiju said the government was willing to hold discussions, but the Opposition repeatedly avoided them. He alleged that the Congress was entirely responsible for creating disruptions in Parliament.

According to Rijiju, 12 Bills were passed during the Monsoon Session, but only one of them was discussed in detail.

The session, which began on July 20, witnessed repeated disruptions from the beginning. Opposition parties initially demanded discussions on the NEET question paper leak and donations related to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Later, protests focused on alleged police action against students demonstrating over the NEET issue.

The Opposition also demanded statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The government made attempts on Monday and Wednesday to initiate a debate on the NEET issue to break the deadlock. However, the efforts failed after the Congress rejected the proposed format of the discussion.

Rahul Gandhi Questions Police Action

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition wanted answers specifically on the police action against protesting students and was not interested in hearing speeches from the Home Minister.

Gandhi questioned who had ordered the use of pellet guns against protesting students. He argued that if Amit Shah had authorised such action, he would be responsible, while if he had not, it would raise questions about his competence as Home Minister.

The Home Minister said the government was prepared to answer all questions related to the issue and offered to begin the discussion at 3 pm, continuing until 3 pm the following day.

Shah Asks Opposition to Write to Lok Sabha Speaker

Shah appealed to Opposition leaders to submit a request to the Lok Sabha Speaker by 2 pm so that the discussion could begin at 3 pm.

He said he was prepared to remain present in the House and respond to questions until 3 pm the next day. According to Shah, there are established rules and procedures for discussing serious matters in Parliament.

The Home Minister also rejected the demand for a brief statement on the issue, arguing that a matter of such seriousness requires a comprehensive parliamentary discussion rather than a standalone statement.

‘Nothing to Hide,’ Says Amit Shah

Shah said the government had nothing to hide and was ready to place all relevant facts before the country.

He added that if the Speaker permits, Question Hour could be suspended to facilitate the discussion. He also said he was prepared to participate personally and respond point-by-point to the issues raised by the Opposition.

Shah challenged the Opposition to decide whether it wanted a substantive debate or continued disruption.

He said a detailed discussion would bring the facts before the public and allow people to judge which side was willing to engage in parliamentary debate and which side was avoiding it.

A major reshuffle of Prime Minister **Narendra Modi‘s Union Cabinet is reportedly in its final stages, with the exercise expected to be completed by the third week of July, ahead of or during the initial phase of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, which begins on July 21.

According to sources, the reshuffle follows an extensive review of ministers’ performance chaired by the Prime Minister. Senior BJP leaders have also held a series of consultations to finalise the changes. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is understood to have held important discussions with President Droupadi Murmu as part of the process. The revamp is also expected to align the government with the BJP’s newly reorganised party structure under its national leadership.

One of the key factors driving the reshuffle is the BJP’s “one person, one post” policy. As a result, Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary, who has been assigned organisational responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh, and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, now heading the Delhi BJP, are reportedly set to leave the Union Council of Ministers.

Meanwhile, despite the completion of his Rajya Sabha term on June 21, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu is expected to continue in the Cabinet for the time being, with the BJP leadership reportedly considering his role important for the party’s strategy ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.

The reshuffle has also gained urgency following the recent resignation of Union Minister George Kurian, creating a vacancy that the government is expected to fill. Some Ministers of State may also be reassigned to organisational responsibilities within the party.
