Nationwide Participation Reflects Unity of Engineers

The Indian Engineers’ Federation (INDEF) successfully held its Federal Council Meeting in Bhubaneswar, hosted by the Odisha Engineers’ Service Association (OESA). The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 120 senior representatives representing 25 states, highlighting the unity and collective voice of the engineering fraternity across India.

Focus on Structural Reforms and Recognition

The meeting primarily focused on long-standing issues related to engineering services in India. Key discussions emphasized the urgent need for structural reforms and enhanced recognition of engineers in governance and nation-building.

Demand for Unified Service Rules

A major highlight of the meeting was the strong demand for a unified service rule applicable to all serving engineers across the country, similar to other All India Services. The Council also stressed that engineering departments should be headed and managed by qualified engineering professionals rather than generalist administrators.

Call for Greater Role in Policy-Making

The Federation underlined the critical role engineers play in developing essential infrastructure such as irrigation systems, water supply, roads, energy, and urban development. It stressed that engineers must be given due recognition and proper representation in policy-making processes.

Key Issues Raised During Deliberations

Several important concerns were discussed during the meeting, including:

• Lack of professional recognition and visibility despite significant contributions
• Disparities in service conditions across different states
• Challenges in cadre management, transfers, seniority, and career progression
• Institutional and administrative hurdles in implementing reforms

Proposal for Engineering Commission

After detailed deliberations, the Council resolved to urge the Government of India to consider establishing an Engineering Commission. This body would help strengthen coordination among state engineering associations and present a unified voice for the profession.

New Leadership Elected

Elections for the Executive Committee of INDEF were also conducted during the meeting. Abinash Roul was elected as Chairman, while Ashis Yadav took charge as Secretary General.

The successful scheme of the meeting in Bhubaneswar marks a significant step toward greater cohesion among engineers nationwide. INDEF reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the interests and dignity of the engineering profession.
