India’s Asia Cup 2025 win celebrations took an unexpected twist when the BCCI demanded the return of the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. The Indian board has issued a stern warning, indicating it could escalate the matter to the ICC level if the trophy is not returned by early October.

The Victory That Sparked the Dispute

A day earlier at the Dubai International Stadium, India had scripted a thrilling win. After bowling first, India bundled out Pakistan for 146 in 20 overs, and later chased down the target with a tense five-wicket win in the last over, claiming their ninth Asia Cup title.

The post-match atmosphere was initially jubilant, but the situation turned awkward soon after the trophy presentation.

Trophy Presentation Controversy

By ACC protocol, it was Mohsin Naqvi’s responsibility to hand over the trophy as ACC president. However, Team India declined to accept it from him, citing conflict of interest due to his dual roles as PCB chief and Pakistan’s Interior Minister.

The BCCI had requested that the Emirates Cricket Board’s vice-president conduct the presentation instead. But with no response, Naqvi carried the trophy from the stadium to his hotel—triggering a fresh controversy.

BCCI’s Stance and Warning

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained:
“Instead of being angry with him for what he did, we gave him the opportunity to correct the mistake by returning the trophy to our team at the earliest. We are hopeful he will choose the right path.”

If the issue remains unresolved, the BCCI is prepared to raise the matter at the ICC meeting in Dubai this November and may even submit a formal complaint.
