Typhoon Noul Makes Landfall in Southern China, Over 340,000 Evacuated and 150 Flights Cancelled

Powerful Typhoon Noul made landfall along China’s southern coast early Sunday, bringing winds of up to 145 kmph, torrential rain and widespread disruption across Guangdong Province. Authorities evacuated more than 340,000 residents to safer locations as the storm battered coastal areas.

According to the China National Meteorological Centre, Typhoon Noul came ashore at around 3:50 a.m. local time in Huidong County of Huizhou City in southern Guangdong. The cyclone struck with intense winds before gradually weakening as it moved inland.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the typhoon was tracking toward the interior of Guangdong Province and had slightly weakened after landfall. However, heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to pose significant risks across the region.

Over 150 Flights Cancelled, Train Services Suspended

Transportation has been severely affected by the storm. According to the Hong Kong International Airport, more than 150 flights scheduled between Saturday and Sunday were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

The China News Service reported that all train services across Guangdong Province were suspended on Sunday as a precautionary measure. State broadcaster CCTV said emergency evacuation operations began on Saturday afternoon, with authorities rushing to relocate residents from vulnerable coastal areas before the cyclone struck.

Building Collapse in Hong Kong

The typhoon also caused structural damage in Hong Kong, where a building under construction collapsed on Saturday. Officials confirmed that no casualties were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported that the storm brought heavy rainfall to the island’s southern regions, worsening weather conditions across southern and eastern Taiwan.

Third Typhoon to Hit China This Month

July has proved to be a particularly challenging month for China, with three typhoons striking the country in quick succession.

Earlier this month, Typhoon Bavi forced nearly 2 million people in eastern China to evacuate from their homes. Before that, Typhoon Maysak made landfall in southern China on July 3, causing widespread disruption.

Meteorologists have warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue through the weekend across Guangdong Province and southeastern Fujian Province, raising concerns over flooding, landslides and further transportation disruptions.

Severe flooding triggered by days of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has created a critical situation across southern China’s Guangdong Province, forcing authorities to evacuate tens of thousands of residents from vulnerable areas.

More Than 37,000 Residents Relocated

According to local authorities, over 37,600 people have been urgently evacuated and moved to safer locations as floodwaters continue to rise in several parts of the province. Emergency response teams remain on high alert amid concerns of further deterioration in weather conditions.

Emergency Response Activated Across Province

To tackle the growing flood threat, Guangdong authorities have activated a Level-III flood control emergency response and a Level-IV disaster relief emergency response across the province. The measures are aimed at ensuring rapid rescue operations and minimizing potential damage.

Schools Closed in Major Cities

As a precautionary measure, all schools and educational institutions in major cities including Zhuhai and Shenzhen have been temporarily closed. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.

Train Services Disrupted

The flooding has also affected transportation networks. China Railway has adjusted the schedules of several train services due to safety concerns and weather-related disruptions, causing inconvenience to passengers across the region.

No Casualties Reported So Far

Despite the severity of the flooding, authorities have confirmed that no deaths or injuries have been reported so far. Emergency agencies continue to monitor conditions closely while carrying out rescue and relief operations.

Massive Rescue and Safety Operations Underway

State media reported that since last Friday, hundreds of firefighters, emergency personnel, rescue vehicles, and 37 rescue boats have been deployed across affected areas. In addition, more than 41,768 personnel from the water resources department are inspecting reservoirs, dams, and other critical infrastructure to ensure their safety.

More Torrential Rain Forecast

Meteorological authorities have warned that southern Guangdong is likely to experience further torrential rainfall through Thursday. The forecast has raised concerns about additional flooding, landslides, and disruptions in low-lying areas.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

With heavy rain expected to continue, local authorities have advised residents to stay updated with official weather alerts and follow evacuation orders when necessary. Rescue teams remain on standby as Guangdong braces for the possibility of further flooding in the coming days.
