The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced India’s 15-member squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, handing over the captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, setting the stage for a high-voltage title campaign on home soil.

Suryakumar Yadav Appointed Captain

Despite a mixed run of form in recent months, the BCCI has shown confidence in 35-year-old Suryakumar Yadav to lead the side. Selectors believe his experience, aggressive mindset, and ability to handle pressure make him the right choice, particularly with the backing of home crowds.

Shubman Gill Left Out in Bold Call

One of the biggest talking points from the selection was the exclusion of Shubman Gill, who was serving as vice-captain. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the decision was not based on Gill’s form but on team composition.

“Gill is good, no doubt, but we wanted more flexibility,” Agarkar said, underlining the selectors’ focus on balance rather than reputation.

Axar Patel Named Vice-Captain

All-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed vice-captain, reflecting his growing importance across formats. His consistency with both bat and ball and calm presence on the field were key factors behind the decision.

Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh Return

The squad also sees the return of Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, while Jitesh Sharma misses out. Kishan adds explosive options at the top of the order along with wicketkeeping duties, while Rinku’s finishing ability strengthens India’s middle and lower order.

Pace and Spin Departments Look Settled

India’s bowling attack features a strong mix of pace and spin. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh will spearhead the fast-bowling unit, while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy provide variety and control in spin-friendly conditions.

Batting Line-up Packed with Firepower

The batting unit includes Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, and Rinku Singh, offering depth and flexibility. The selectors appear to have prioritized aggressive batting options to suit modern T20 demands.

New Zealand Series to Test Combination

The selected squad will be tested in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January. The series is expected to give the team management a clear picture of combinations and roles ahead of the World Cup.
