A low-pressure area has formed over southwest West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilting southwestwards.

The weather system is likely to trigger heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha until August 14. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Alert for four districts and a Yellow Warning for 19 districts for the next 24 hours.

Four Districts Under Orange Alert

The weather office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur, which have been placed under an Orange Alert.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Nuapada and Bolangir.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alert

Several districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds along with rainfall. Winds may reach speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in affected areas.

The districts under the thunderstorm and lightning warning include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Odisha Coast to Remain Rough

According to the weather office, the Odisha coast is likely to remain rough on August 8 and 9. Winds may blow at 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph.

In view of the rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast for two days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning and to follow official weather advisories as the low-pressure system continues to influence Odisha.
