The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 13.

According to the weather department, the cyclonic circulation currently extends up to 9.4 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal after the system moves towards the Andaman Sea around October 11.

However, the IMD has not yet clarified whether the anticipated low-pressure system will intensify further.

Yellow Warning for 14 Districts

The IMD has issued a yellow warning for 14 districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph during the next 24 hours.

The districts under the weather alert are Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

The weather department has indicated that coastal and interior districts may experience rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. While light to moderate showers are likely in several areas, isolated locations may receive heavy rainfall over the next two days.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning.

Low-Pressure System Expected by October 13

The developing weather system over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining regions is expected to move towards the Andaman Sea by October 11. Subsequently, a low-pressure area may form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 13.

The possible development of the system is being closely monitored. Its future movement and the likelihood of further intensification remain uncertain at this stage.

The formation of the low-pressure area could influence weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions in the coming days.

No Major Change in Temperature Forecast

Meanwhile, the IMD has stated that there is unlikely to be any significant change in day and night temperatures across Odisha during the next seven days.

The southwest monsoon is also continuing its withdrawal from the state. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the withdrawal process is progressing through areas along the Sundargarh and Bargarh districts.

With the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall in several districts, residents are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions during adverse weather conditions.

Odisha may witness rain during Durga Puja as a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea around October 13. Meanwhile, the state is experiencing hot and dry weather after recent heavy rainfall and flooding.

According to the weather outlook, a cyclonic circulation may form over the Andaman Sea around October 12, which could intensify into a low-pressure area by October 13. The system may subsequently move towards the south-central or adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 15, with a possibility of developing into a weak depression.

Weather expert Surendra Nath Pashupalak has indicated that the system could influence weather conditions over Odisha during the Durga Puja period, potentially bringing rainfall to parts of the state.

Puja Committees Prepare for Possible Rain

The possibility of rain during Durga Puja has become a concern for puja committees, with preparations already underway across the state.

Committees are making arrangements to protect idols and ensure the safety and convenience of devotees in case of rainfall. At Rasulgarh, where a puja is being organised beneath the bridge, arrangements have reportedly been made to provide shelter to devotees during rain.

Temporary stalls have also been set up around the puja venue, which can be used by visitors for shelter if rainfall occurs.

Odisha Experiencing Hot Weather

Meanwhile, Odisha is currently experiencing hot and dry conditions following the heavy rainfall and flooding triggered by the recent deep depression.

Nayagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 36°C during the past 24 hours. Bhubaneswar recorded 35.5°C, while Cuttack registered 34.8°C. Phulbani recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 20°C.

For the next three days, no rainfall or other significant weather warning has been issued for any district of Odisha, and dry weather is expected to prevail.

Daytime temperatures are likely to remain high and may rise by another 1°C to 2°C in the coming days.

The evolving low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal will be closely watched as its strength, movement and potential impact on Odisha become clearer closer to mid-October.

Another low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea around October 13, with the system potentially bringing fresh rainfall to Odisha. Meanwhile, flood-hit Bhadrak continues to face waterlogging, damaged crops and inundation in several villages.

According to the weather outlook, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea around October 12. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may develop over the Andaman Sea around October 13.

There is also a possibility that the system could move towards the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal around October 15. However, the chances of the low-pressure area intensifying into a depression during this period are currently considered low.

The weather system could nevertheless trigger heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha, particularly if it moves closer to the state coast.

Flood Situation Remains Serious in Bhadrak

Meanwhile, several parts of Odisha continue to face the effects of prolonged rainfall associated with the existing low-pressure system. The Baitarani, Salandi and several branch rivers, including Kochila, Reba, Kapali and Nalia, have caused flooding in different areas.

Bhadrak district has been among the worst affected areas. Seven blocks of the district have been affected by the flood, with more than 205 villages across around 81 gram panchayats reportedly inundated.

More than two lakh people have been affected by the flooding in the district.

A yellow warning for rainfall was also issued for Bhadrak for the following 24 hours amid the prevailing weather conditions.

Floodwater Still Submerges Villages in Dhamnagar

In Dhamnagar block, floodwater continues to create severe problems for residents of several villages.

At Sasan Sahi in Lunia village under Khaparapada Gram Panchayat, floodwater is still flowing at a depth of around two feet. Residents have to wade through the water to leave the village and access other areas.

The situation has been aggravated by a major breach in the Nalia river near Ankappada. Floodwater from the river has been entering the village through the breach, leaving large areas surrounded by water.

Several houses, agricultural fields and vegetable crops have been damaged due to the flooding. Many residents in low-lying areas continue to remain marooned as floodwater has not completely receded.

Although the intensity of the flood has started to decline in some areas, the situation remains difficult in several low-lying pockets. With another weather system potentially developing over the Bay of Bengal next week, authorities and residents are keeping a close watch on the evolving weather conditions.

Odisha is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall as two low-pressure systems are likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in September. Rainfall may intensify from September 9, with heavy rain expected between September 10 and 12. Another system could trigger fresh rainfall around September 19–21, though its intensity and track remain uncertain.

The forecast has raised concerns as several parts of the state had recently experienced heavy rain and flood-like conditions.

According to weather expert Professor Surendranath Pashupalak, the first low-pressure system may develop around September 10–11 over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast.

The system could intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area and is likely to move northwestwards across Odisha towards Chhattisgarh and central India.

Under its influence, rainfall activity in Odisha may increase from September 9, with the intensity expected to remain higher between September 10 and 12.

Initially, northern and north-coastal districts are likely to receive increased rainfall. The rain may subsequently spread to coastal, central and southern parts of the state.

The weather system is expected to move inland around September 13–14, following which rainfall activity in Odisha may gradually decline.

However, another low-pressure system could emerge over the Bay of Bengal between September 17 and 20, according to preliminary indications. Its influence may trigger another spell of increased rainfall in Odisha around September 19–21.

Experts, however, have cautioned that it is too early to make a definite assessment of the second system’s intensity, movement and rainfall potential. The forecast could change as the system develops and its track becomes clearer.

The latest prediction comes shortly after several districts of Odisha witnessed intense rainfall and flooding. Although the situation has improved after the recent spell of rain, the possibility of another round of heavy rainfall has raised concerns among residents and authorities.

People in vulnerable and low-lying areas are likely to remain particularly watchful as weather conditions evolve over the next few days.

A cyclonic circulation is currently active over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coast.

The circulation is extending between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the region on August 29.

The developing weather system could trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj for the next 24 hours, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for 14 districts for heavy rainfall.

Rainfall to Increase From August 29

Rainfall activity is expected to intensify from August 29, with several parts of Odisha likely to receive rain. The wet spell may continue for around seven days, extending up to September 2.

Along the Odisha coast, winds are likely to reach 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, resulting in rough sea conditions. Fishermen have therefore been advised not to venture into the sea on August 30 and 31.

14 Districts Under Yellow Warning

The districts under the Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall are Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda.

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in Ganjam, Gajapati, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh and Kandhamal districts.

With another weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal, authorities and residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert as rainfall activity is expected to increase across the state.

Odisha braces for another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system remains active over north Odisha and Jharkhand. With rainfall already 30% above normal since June 1, prolonged showers and waterlogging are raising concerns over agricultural losses and declining crop production.

A low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal continues to remain active over north Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand. Under its influence, the system is expected to move northwestwards over the next 24 hours, passing through north Odisha and Jharkhand. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast an increase in rainfall across the state from August 29.

Several parts of Odisha are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, while some areas may experience heavy to very heavy rain. The weather system is also expected to bring thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts.

For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning, thunder and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph is likely in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. The weather department has issued a Yellow Warning for these districts.

Another weather system may develop around August 28 over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas off the north Odisha coast. By around August 30, the system could intensify into a low-pressure area. North and coastal Odisha may then witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Odisha Records Highest Rainfall in the Country

Amid the continuing rainfall, Odisha has recorded the highest rainfall in the country during the current spell. Several parts of the state received light to moderate rain, while two locations recorded extremely heavy rainfall.

Heavy rainfall was reported from eight locations. Barkot in Deogarh recorded the highest rainfall at 162.2 mm.

Since June 1, Odisha has received 1,096.9 mm of rainfall, which is around 30 per cent above the normal rainfall for the period.

Continuous Rain Threatens Agricultural Operations

The back-to-back low-pressure systems have severely affected agricultural activities across Odisha. At a time when transplanting and other major paddy cultivation activities should have been completed, several farmlands remain waterlogged due to persistent rainfall.

Agriculture expert Surendra Nath Pashupalak said the state’s agricultural output could decline this year. He attributed the expected decline to the delayed arrival of the monsoon, delays in transplanting operations and crop damage caused by prolonged rainfall.

According to him, not only paddy but also several non-paddy crops have suffered damage due to waterlogging and continuous rain. The repeated spells of heavy rainfall have therefore raised concerns over crop production and the livelihood of farmers across the state.
