East Coast Railway Achieves Record Scrap Disposal Revenue in FY 2025–26

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has recorded its highest-ever scrap disposal revenue of ₹290.22 crore in the financial year 2025–26, marking a major milestone in resource management and operational efficiency.

Surpasses Target with Strong Growth

The रेलवे zone exceeded the Railway Board target of ₹260 crore by ₹30.22 crore, achieving an impressive 11.62% increase over the assigned goal.

Additionally, the latest figures represent a 7.77% growth compared to the previous year’s best performance of around ₹269.3 crore, highlighting consistent improvement in revenue generation.

Swachhata Drives Boost Performance

Officials credited the achievement to sustained Swachhata Drives conducted across divisions, workshops, and loco sheds under the “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign. These initiatives have not only enhanced cleanliness but also improved safety standards and operational efficiency.

Efficient Scrap Disposal and E-Auction Process

A major factor behind the success has been systematic monitoring and transparent e-auction processes. The coordinated efforts of various departments, particularly the Stores Department, ensured effective disposal of scrap materials.

This streamlined approach helped convert unused and condemned assets into substantial financial returns.

Key Contributions to Record Revenue

The record-breaking revenue was driven by the disposal of large volumes of scrap, including over 40,342 metric tonnes of condemned rails and permanent way materials, more than 5 lakh PSC sleepers, and significant quantities of ferrous scrap.

Additionally, condemned rolling stock such as electric and diesel locomotives, coaches, and wagons were auctioned efficiently.

Focus on Sustainability and Efficiency

ECoR emphasized that efficient scrap disposal remains a priority area, as it not only generates revenue but also supports environmental sustainability. Cleaner premises, safer workplaces, and better asset utilization are key outcomes of these efforts.

Setting a Benchmark for Indian Railways

With this achievement, East Coast Railway has set a benchmark for other zones under Indian Railways. The milestone reflects its commitment to financial prudence, operational excellence, and sustainable practices.

Records Highest-Ever Freight Loading
Bhubaneswar, April 1, 2026: The Indian Railways’ East Coast Railway (ECoR) has once again emerged as the leading freight handling zone, achieving a record-breaking freight loading of 286.3 million tonnes (MT) during the financial year 2025–26. This marks an increase of 27 MT compared to 259.25 MT in 2024–25, highlighting sustained operational efficiency and growth.

Strong Growth in Freight Revenue
Alongside the rise in freight loading, East Coast Railway reported impressive earnings of ₹29,456.60 crore from freight operations, up from ₹26,691.82 crore in the previous fiscal. This represents a growth of over 10%, reinforcing its dominant position among all railway zones.

Seven Years of Consistent Performance
ECoR has now surpassed the 200 MT freight loading benchmark for the seventh consecutive year. The zone alone contributed 17.1% to the total 1669.9 MT freight handled by Indian Railways, underlining its strategic importance. Key commodities transported include coal, iron ore, steel, cement, alumina, fertilizers, and food grains.

Passenger Segment Also Shows Growth
The zone also witnessed steady improvement in passenger services. During 2025–26, East Coast Railway carried 97.64 million passengers, generating ₹2,495.51 crore in revenue. This is an increase from 93.52 million passengers and ₹2,371.09 crore earned in 2024–25.

Operational Excellence Driving Success
The achievement is attributed to efficient freight management, improved wagon utilization, enhanced infrastructure, modern signalling systems, and strong inter-departmental coordination. ECoR Conducts Civil Defence Demonstration on Disaster Preparedness in Bhubaneswar

East Coast Railway (ECoR) organised a comprehensive Civil Defence demonstration programme in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday to showcase preparedness, coordination and effective response during emergency and disaster situations. As many as 59 Civil Defence volunteers from different divisions of ECoR actively participated in the programme.

General Manager Attends as Chief Guest

The programme was graced by Shri Parmeshwar Funkwal, General Manager, East Coast Railway, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Shri Funkwal appreciated the dedication, discipline and professional competence of the Civil Defence volunteers. He highlighted the crucial role played by Civil Defence in safeguarding lives and property during emergencies such as rail accidents, natural calamities and other unforeseen situations.

Emphasis on Training and Public Awareness

The General Manager stressed the importance of continuous training, regular mock drills and public awareness programmes to further strengthen disaster preparedness and response mechanisms across the railway network.

Live Demonstrations of Rescue Operations

The demonstration programme was conducted under the guidance of Camp Commander Shri S.V.D.N. Chandra Sekhar, Pt. CDI. It began with a rail accident public reaction drill, followed by a series of well-coordinated light and heavy rescue operations and first-aid techniques.

Key demonstrations included casualty evacuation methods, ladder and rope rescue, stretcher operations, rappelling and wall crawling, casualty dragging techniques, electric shock management with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), fireman lift and live fire-fighting exercises.

High Level of Preparedness Displayed

Each activity was executed with precision and teamwork by the trained Civil Defence personnel, reflecting a high level of preparedness, coordination and operational efficiency during emergency scenarios.

Programme Concludes with Formal Reporting

The programme concluded with the successful completion of the rescue operations and formal reporting to the Chief Guest by the Camp Commander.

Boost to Disaster Management Awareness

The Civil Defence demonstration programme significantly enhanced public awareness on disaster management and reaffirmed the commitment of Civil Defence volunteers of East Coast Railway towards ensuring safety, resilience and effective response during emergencies.

CYCLONE MONTHA IMPACT: EAST COAST RAILWAY CANCELS, DIVERTS MULTIPLE TRAINS FOR PASSENGER SAFETY

Precautionary Step Amid Cyclone Threat

With Cyclone Montha approaching the east coast, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced extensive cancellations, diversions, and short terminations of several trains operating in the Waltair region and connected routes. The move aims to ensure maximum passenger safety in view of the severe weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Officials said these measures are “purely precautionary” and will remain in effect until weather conditions stabilize.

List of Cancelled Trains

ECoR has cancelled 32 trains between October 27 and 29, 2025, due to the cyclone’s potential impact. These include major passenger, express, and MEMU services across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

A number of MEMU and Passenger trains on the Visakhapatnam–Palasa, Visakhapatnam–Vizianagaram, and Gunupur routes have also been suspended.

Train Diversion Announced

• Train No. 18189 Tatanagar–Ernakulam Express, leaving Tatanagar on October 28, 2025, will be diverted via Titlagarh–Lakholi–Raipur–Nagpur–Balharshah due to route disruption risks.

Short Termination of Services

• 18447 Bhubaneswar–Jagdalpur Hirakhand Express (Oct 27) will be short terminated at Rayagada.
• 18107 Rourkela–Jagdalpur Intercity Express (Oct 27) will also terminate at Rayagada instead of Jagdalpur.

ECoR officials stated that these adjustments were necessary to prevent trains from entering vulnerable sections likely to be affected by the cyclone.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

East Coast Railway has activated full-scale safety and emergency measures to tackle the situation:

24×7 Emergency Control Rooms operational at all Divisional Headquarters.
Real-time coordination with IMD for weather and wind updates.
Restoration teams and relief materials kept ready at vulnerable points.
Additional manpower deployed at key junctions for passenger assistance.
Food, water, and shelter arrangements made for stranded passengers at major stations.
Refund counters and help desks opened at major railway stations for passenger convenience.

Passengers are urged to check the latest train running status on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), IRCTC website/app, or contact the nearest Railway Helpline before starting their journey.

ECoR has requested passengers to avoid unnecessary travel during the cyclone period and to stay updated through official channels only.
