Southwest Monsoon Advances Towards Odisha; IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alerts Across 26 Districts

The southwest monsoon is steadily advancing towards Odisha, with weather conditions remaining favourable for its further progress into parts of the state within the next three to four days. The information was shared by Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

While Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms have provided temporary relief from the scorching heat and humidity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued thunderstorm activity across most parts of the state over the next 24 hours.

Orange Alert for Eight Districts

The IMD has issued thunderstorm warnings for 26 districts, excluding Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for the remaining 17 districts, where thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected.

Heatwave Conditions Likely to Persist

Despite intermittent rainfall, the weather department has cautioned that residents may not get immediate relief from the prevailing heat. Temperatures across Odisha are expected to rise by as much as three degrees Celsius over the next three days.

Coastal and southern Odisha are likely to experience severe heat and uncomfortable humidity levels, making conditions oppressive for residents.

On Sunday, temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state, including Bhubaneswar and many locations in western Odisha. Hot winds swept across the region from late morning before weather conditions changed dramatically in the afternoon.

Kalbaisakhi Brings Rain and Strong Winds

Several coastal districts, including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Paradip and Balasore, witnessed heavy rain and strong winds under the influence of Kalbaisakhi storms. Intense lightning and thunder accompanied the showers, causing concern among residents.

Boudh recorded the highest daytime temperature in the state at 41.9 degrees Celsius. Titlagarh registered 41.7 degrees Celsius, while Bhawanipatna and Nayagarh recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius each. Talcher reported 41 degrees Celsius, while Balangir, Sambalpur and Sonepur recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon Likely to Enter Odisha Between June 10 and 13

Senior agrometeorologist Professor Surendranath Pasupalak has predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Odisha between June 10 and June 13.

According to him, monsoon activity over the Bay of Bengal had been relatively slow in recent weeks. However, significant improvement has been observed over the past two days, with the monsoon advancing further and moisture-laden winds spreading towards Odisha.

The changing weather pattern across coastal and southern Odisha, marked by frequent thunderstorms and rainfall, indicates favourable conditions for monsoon onset.

Rainfall Activity Expected to Increase

Professor Pasupalak noted that cloud cover is expected to increase between now and June 10, leading to higher humidity levels and more frequent thunderstorm activity.

As monsoon conditions strengthen, temperatures are likely to gradually decline. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify between June 12 and June 15 under the direct influence of the southwest monsoon.

Western Odisha, however, may have to wait slightly longer. The monsoon is expected to reach the region between June 12 and June 16, with widespread monsoon rains likely between June 15 and June 18.

Until then, residents of western Odisha are expected to continue experiencing intense heat, with significant relief unlikely before June 10.

Scorching Days, Stormy Evenings: Odisha Continues to Reel Under Heat and Humidity

Despite the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala, Odisha continues to experience intense summer heat, with soaring temperatures and high humidity making conditions increasingly uncomfortable across the state. While thunderstorms and Kalbaisakhi activity are providing temporary relief in some areas, the heat and sultry weather remain a major concern.

Bhubaneswar Records Severe Heat Stress

The capital city, Bhubaneswar, witnessed a sharp rise in temperature on Thursday. By 11 a.m., the mercury had already climbed to 38°C, and by 2:30 p.m., it reached 41°C.

However, the actual discomfort was far greater due to high humidity levels. At 11 a.m., the relative humidity stood at 47 percent, making the temperature feel like 47°C. Similarly, at around 11:30 a.m., humidity levels of 38 percent resulted in a heat index close to 50°C, creating extremely oppressive conditions for residents.

Southwest Monsoon Advances Further

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Southwest Monsoon is steadily advancing across the country.

On Thursday, the monsoon progressed into parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, along with additional areas of the Arabian Sea. Weather conditions remain favourable for its further advance into the central Arabian Sea, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and adjoining regions of the Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologists have also indicated that conditions are conducive for the monsoon to advance into the northeastern states over the next two to three days.

Kalbaisakhi Likely Across Several Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast thunderstorms and Kalbaisakhi activity across various districts of Odisha over the next five days.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangpur districts. These areas may experience thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh districts. Wind speeds in these regions may range between 40 and 50 kmph during thunderstorm activity.

Heat and Humidity to Persist

Even as thunderstorms continue to occur intermittently, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist across much of the state.

Warm night conditions are likely in parts of Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Balangir districts. In addition, Yellow Alerts for hot and humid weather have been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh districts.

No Major Temperature Drop Expected

According to the weather department’s forecast, there is little likelihood of any significant change in maximum daytime temperatures across Odisha over the next six to seven days.

During the next 24 hours, the maximum temperature is expected to remain around 40°C, while the minimum temperature may hover near 28°C. Authorities have advised people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and remain alert during thunderstorm activity.

With the monsoon still making its way toward Odisha, residents are likely to experience a combination of scorching heat, oppressive humidity, and evening thunderstorms in the days ahead.

A strong trough line remains active over Odisha and extends towards the east-central Bay of Bengal, creating favorable conditions for widespread thunderstorm activity across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall, lightning, hailstorms, and strong gusty winds in several districts over the next 24 hours.

Orange Alert for 10 Districts

According to the weather department, districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Kandhamal are likely to experience severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph at one or two places during the next 24 hours.

Additionally, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, and Nayagarh may witness thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. In view of the potential impact, the IMD has issued an Orange Alert for these districts.

Yellow Warning for 16 Other Districts

The weather office has also issued a Yellow Warning for Balasore, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Subarnapur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, and Khordha districts.

These areas are expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph during the afternoon and evening hours over the next day.

Kalbaisakhi Activity Likely Till June 5

The IMD has warned that pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity, locally known as Kalbaisakhi, is likely to continue across Odisha until June 5. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of lightning and strong winds, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Monsoon Yet to Reach Kerala

While thunderstorm activity continues over Odisha, the southwest monsoon is still delayed in its arrival over Kerala. The IMD had earlier predicted monsoon onset over Kerala by May 26, but the seasonal rains have not yet reached the state.

The latest assessment suggests that the monsoon may advance into parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu within the next three to four days, although meteorologists say it is too early to confirm the exact date.

Temperatures Likely to Rise

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has indicated that maximum temperatures across Odisha could rise by 2°C to 3°C over the next four to five days despite intermittent thunderstorm activity.

Experts Say Odisha’s Monsoon Depends More on Bay of Bengal Conditions

Agricultural meteorologist Surendranath Pashupalak stated that global ensemble weather models and current atmospheric conditions indicate a likely monsoon onset over Kerala between June 1 and June 4. If atmospheric conditions remain weak, the onset could be delayed further to June 5 or June 6.

He emphasized that a delayed monsoon arrival in Kerala does not necessarily mean an equivalent delay for Odisha. Historical weather patterns show that monsoon progress over Odisha is often influenced more by atmospheric developments over the Bay of Bengal than by the exact date of monsoon onset in Kerala.

Past Examples Show Variable Monsoon Progress

According to weather experts, during El Niño years such as 1997 and 2015, enhanced activity over the Bay of Bengal helped the monsoon advance rapidly into eastern India. However, in 2009, monsoon progression was slower and less organized.

Current atmospheric indicators suggest that Odisha is likely to experience a transitional pre-monsoon phase during the coming week, marked by thunderstorms, fluctuating temperatures, and changing weather patterns before the eventual arrival of the southwest monsoon.

Rising Heat Grips the State
With the onset of summer, temperatures across Odisha have already crossed 37°C, triggering heatwave-like conditions in several regions. From the capital Bhubaneswar to interior districts, residents are experiencing intense heat and dry weather.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the heat is expected to intensify further over the next three days.

Temperature Likely to Rise Further
Starting Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to increase by 2°C to 4°C, making conditions more uncomfortable. The absence of any active weather system means there is little chance of widespread rainfall during this period.

However, isolated areas may experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Relief Expected from March 27
Weather conditions are expected to change from March 27, bringing some relief from the scorching heat. The Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall across northern, southern, and coastal districts of Odisha between March 27 and 28.

Several districts, including Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Balangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Jajpur, are likely to witness thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 km/h along with light to moderate rainfall.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for 15 districts in view of lightning and gusty winds.

Thunderstorm Alert for Multiple Districts
On March 28, districts such as Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h.

The weather department has also indicated that while conditions may normalize in some areas on March 29 and 30, isolated rainfall and lightning activity could still occur in a few districts.

Weather in the Last 24 Hours
In the past 24 hours, three locations recorded temperatures above 36°C, with Dhenkanal’s Mahisapat reporting the highest at 36.8°C.

Meanwhile, some regions received rainfall, with Gajapati and Paralakhemundi recording the highest precipitation of around 16 mm.

Advisory for Residents
With rising temperatures and possible thunderstorms ahead, residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to heat, and remain cautious during lightning and gusty wind conditions.
