Six rebel BJD MLAs have openly defied party leadership after being issued show-cause notices for alleged cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections, calling the action “illegal” and “unconstitutional.” Challenging the authority of Naveen Patnaik and Chief Whip Pramila Mallik, they argue that party whips do not apply in Rajya Sabha polls and have threatened criminal proceedings, escalating the internal crisis into a high-stakes legal and political battle.

The internal rift within the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has fractured into a full-blown legal and political showdown. Six MLAs, accused of cross-voting in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, have launched a blistering counter-offensive against the party leadership, branding the disciplinary show-cause notices issued to them as “illegal” and “unconstitutional.”

In a move that directly challenges the authority of BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, the rebel legislators have not only refused to apologise but have threatened criminal proceedings against the party’s Chief Whip, Pramila Mallik.

The Constitutional Gambit

The six MLAs submitted their formal responses to the Chief Whip just before the Friday 5:00 PM deadline. Their primary defence rests on a technicality of electoral law: they argue that the party’s “whip” does not legally apply to Rajya Sabha elections.

Citing previous rulings by the Supreme Court and guidelines from the Election Commission, the rebels maintained that their actions do not fall under the purview of the anti-defection law in this specific context. “To issue a show-cause notice for exercising one’s franchise is a violation of the law,” the group stated, demanding an immediate withdrawal of the notices or face a “protracted legal battle.”

“Filth is Being Filtered”: Pramila Mallik Hits Back

The BJD leadership has reacted with visible disdain to the rebels’ legal posturing. Speaking with trademark grit, Pramila Mallik dismissed the MLAs’ claims as a scripted facade orchestrated by political rivals.

“The law is equal for everyone. They talk of ‘conscience’ now, but where was this conscience when they accepted BJD tickets to contest elections?” Mallik questioned. She further alleged that the response letters were not written by the MLAs themselves but were “typed in a single office” by those who have “bought” their loyalty.

In a scathing analogy, Mallik suggested the party was undergoing a much-needed cleansing. “The BJD is being filtered. Once all the ‘dirt’ and ‘rubbish’ is cleared out, the party will emerge cleaner and stronger,” she added.

A High-Stakes Standoff

The rebels have gone a step further, accusing the party leadership of the “punishable offence” of trying to influence or restrain a legislator’s vote. They have threatened to lodge criminal cases against Mallik for what they term “intimidation.”

The ball is now firmly in Naveen Patnaik’s court. While the rebels challenge the party to “expel them if they dare,” the BJD high command is reportedly consulting legal experts to navigate the complexities of the Rajya Sabha voting rules.

The Key Allegations:

The Rebels: Claim the show-cause is a breach of Election Commission norms; threaten criminal charges against the Chief Whip.

The BJD: Labels the move as “theft of votes”; claims the rebels are puppets of the opposition; promises “strict action” after consulting the Party Supremo.

As the deadline passes, the political atmosphere in Odisha remains electric. Whether this leads to mass disqualifications or a quiet tactical retreat by the BJD will depend on the Supreme Court’s interpretation of party discipline versus legislative freedom.

The suspension of two BJD MLAs has sparked a political storm in Odisha, with party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty alleging a deliberate plot to split the Biju Janata Dal and asserting that Naveen Patnaik acted decisively against corruption and betrayal within the party.

Odisha politics plunged into fresh turmoil after Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suspended two party MLAs, triggering intense speculation about internal dissent. With no immediate official explanation, rumours of factionalism and rebellion began circulating widely in political circles.

Clarity came when senior BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty publicly alleged that the suspensions were linked to a larger conspiracy aimed at breaking the party from within.

‘Mid-Day Operation’ to Destabilise BJD: Mohanty

Addressing the media, Mohanty drew parallels with past attempts to destabilise the BJD, recalling what he described as earlier “midnight operations” to topple the party. This time, he said, the attempt was a “mid-day operation,” which was swiftly thwarted by Naveen Patnaik.

In a sharp remark, Mohanty added that even if conspirators attempt a “mid-evening operation” in the future, they would meet the same fate. His comments underscored the party leadership’s confidence in controlling internal challenges.

Names Named, Fingers Pointed

Mohanty directly accused Bijay Mahapatra, Arabinda Mahapatra and Sanatan Mahakud of fomenting unrest within the BJD over the past several months. According to him, these leaders had been actively working to create divisions and weaken the party’s organisational unity.

He specifically alleged that Bijay Mahapatra played a central role in backing efforts to destabilise the BJD from within.

‘Corruption and Betrayal’ Behind Suspensions

Explaining the rationale behind the disciplinary action, Mohanty stated that the suspended MLAs were found guilty of corruption and betrayal. “It is very simple—corruption and betrayal,” he said, adding that they were working against the interests of the BJD.

Mohanty emphasised that Patnaik did not act in haste. Instead, the party president took time to verify information, assess evidence, and only then decided to suspend the MLAs.

Why Others Were Spared

Responding to questions on why leaders such as Debasish Samantaray were not punished, Mohanty clarified that action was taken only against those who were caught “red-handed.” He noted that Samantaray had never openly spoken about splitting the party, distinguishing his case from those who faced suspension.

Cracks in a Party Known for Unity

The episode has exposed underlying tensions within a party that has long prided itself on discipline and unity under Naveen Patnaik’s leadership. Political observers view the suspensions as a clear message to potential rebels, especially with elections on the horizon.

Silence from Suspended MLAs, More Drama Likely

The two suspended MLAs have so far maintained silence, leaving room for further political developments. In Odisha’s charged political atmosphere, analysts believe the controversy is far from over.

As events unfold, the BJD faces the challenge of managing internal dissent while projecting stability to voters—a task that could shape the party’s political fortunes in the months ahead.

Political commentator Shreemayee Mishra has sparked controversy with a fierce social media post accusing V.K. Pandian and Sujata R. Kartikeyan of engineering a backdoor power grab within the BJD. Comparing the party to a sinking Titanic, Mishra alleged a plot to elevate Sujata to the Rajya Sabha and warned of growing discontent among grassroots workers ahead of the couple’s Nuapada visit.

Firebrand political commentator Shreemayee Mishra has launched a blistering attack on former bureaucrat V.K. The controversy erupted after reports surfaced about their upcoming visit to Nuapada, a BJD stronghold, triggering political ripples across Odisha.

“BJD Is Like the Titanic,” Says Mishra

Taking to Facebook, Mishra drew a dramatic comparison between the BJD and the ill-fated Titanic, alleging that internal conspiracies were being woven to sink the party from within. She claimed that “power brokers” around Shakti Nani — a veiled reference to Sujata Kartikeyan — were lobbying to secure her a Rajya Sabha seat, thereby altering the party’s power structure.

Mishra’s post read like a political allegory: “No maternal domestic awaits in Nuapada, nor paternal hearth in Kendrapara — only never-ending drama.” She questioned Pandian’s political legitimacy with a sharp jab — “How can one who grew up on the waters of Jharkhand understand the Odia pulse?”

Attack on “Sycophants” and the “Hijack Plan”

Mishra accused a section of Nuapada-based BJD leaders of acting as “sycophants” eager to anoint Sujata as the heir apparent, even as senior figures like Subhadra Mata remain untouchable in party hierarchy. Referring to a viral hospital video showing local supporters praising Sujata, Mishra wrote:

“We threw out the Tamil son; what reverence remains for the wife of the Tamil son?”

She alleged that the “hijack plan” of the BJD was being executed through the induction of Sujata into key political activities, effectively sidelining long-time loyalists who had served the party for decades.

Past Criticism and Ganjam Connection

This is not Mishra’s first outburst against the BJD’s inner circle. In an earlier post, she blamed the rot in the party’s leadership on an “overlord from Ganjam,” whom she accused of settling personal scores and sabotaging the careers of loyal party workers. “Time, the great equaliser, will soon take its toll on these misdeeds,” she wrote, hinting at internal rivalries festering within the organisation.

Political Ripples Ahead of Nuapada Visit

The remarks have come at a politically sensitive moment as Pandian and Sujata are reportedly set to tour Nuapada, a district symbolic of both loyalty and unrest within the BJD cadre. Mishra’s remarks have fueled speculation about a realignment within the party and growing dissatisfaction among grassroots members.

Observers note that as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik continues to insist that “the people will choose his successor,” the party appears divided between old-guard loyalists and new power centres. Mishra’s comments, while controversial, have once again exposed the deep undercurrents shaping Odisha’s political narrative in the post-Naveen era.

After being suspended for alleged anti-party activities, Odisha political figure Shreemayee Mishra has launched a series of provocative social media posts targeting the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). In her posts, she compared party leaders to Mahabharata’s Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana and referred to a “fraudulent saint” from the web series Aashram, widely interpreted as indirect jabs at BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik and his close aide VK Pandian. The party had previously cautioned her against such posts, and her suspension has reignited discussions of internal discord.

Mishra Calls Suspension “Laughable”

Mishra dismissed her suspension as “laughable”, explaining that she had not renewed her party membership for a year and had not been active in the BJD. She criticized Patnaik for remaining silent when she endured insults from senior members, including being called “Surpanakha.” Describing Patnaik as a father figure, she expressed her disappointment at his response: “It happens in politics.” She also challenged the party to provide her membership details, questioning the leadership’s handling of her case.

BJD Defends Its Position

In response, BJD leaders Snehangini Chhuria and Lelin Mohanty held a press conference, presenting photos and videos showing Mishra’s regular presence at party events. The party branded her as an instigator attempting to divert attention by playing the “victim card”, highlighting the ongoing challenges of maintaining party unity.

Public War of Words

The conflict has escalated into a public war of words, exposing cracks within the BJD and fueling speculation about Mishra’s next political move. Observers are now closely watching how both sides manage this internal dispute and its potential impact on the party ahead of upcoming political challenges.

The announcement, made on Friday by party headquarters in-charge Pratap Jena, underscores widening rifts within the regional heavyweight.

The 78-year-old, a four-time MLA from Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal, faced suspension barely a day after he publicly criticised the BJD’s “helplessness” as the main opposition.

Narrow Defeat in 2024 Sparked Discontent

Mallik, who had served as minister for steel & mines and works, lost his seat in the 2024 Assembly polls to BJP’s Satrughna Jena by a slender margin of just over 4,000 votes. That defeat appears to have deepened his frustrations.

On Thursday, he openly admitted to distancing himself from party duties, accusing the BJD of failing to hold the ruling BJP accountable on issues of public welfare and governance lapses. He warned that he would leave if the party continued to function in an “unsystematic” manner.

By Friday morning, Mallik submitted his resignation personally. Soon after, the party formally declared his suspension. Interestingly, Mallik maintained: “I have not gone against the party,” though the damage was already irreparable.

A String of High-Profile Exits

Mallik’s exit follows closely on the heels of two other senior leaders—former Rajya Sabha MP N. Bhaskar Rao and ex-minister Lal Bihari Himirika—who also walked out of the party this week. All pointed fingers at poor internal management as the reason behind their decisions.

The once-dominant BJD, which enjoyed over two decades of unbroken power under Naveen Patnaik, now appears fragmented in the aftermath of its 2024 defeat.

The Pandian Factor and Internal Resentment

Mallik was among the 12 veteran leaders who, back in April, criticised “outside powers” for undermining Patnaik’s leadership—a veiled reference to V.K. Pandian, Patnaik’s influential aide who recently retired from politics after facing backlash.

He also accused the party of “betrayals,” citing its unexpected support to the BJP-led NDA on issues such as the Waqf Bill in Rajya Sabha. Such moves, Mallik argued, alienated the BJD’s grassroots workers who once formed its backbone.

What Lies Ahead for BJD?

The message is unmissable: dissent within the BJD is steadily simmering. Unless checked, it could spill over, eroding the party’s cadre base even further.

Two possible scenarios now loom large—leaders like Mallik may switch to the BJP, boosting its reach in Odisha, or splinter groups may emerge to challenge the BJD from within.

On a human note, Mallik’s fall from grace is poignant: a founding member and loyal veteran, he now finds himself sidelined in the very party he helped build.

As the principal opposition, the BJD faces a survival test—reinvent itself or risk political irrelevance. And given the current trend, more exits could soon follow.

In another salvo that has rocked the political landscape of Odisha, a senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA, Badri Patra, has launched an unending attack on the internal politics of the party, labelling those in positions of power as having crossed the limit and lost the ability to inspire trust in the rank and file.

In recent remarks, Badri Patra, a long-time lawmaker known for his outspoken positions, did not mince words, emphasising how such sins sow divisions in the BJD. Individuals who hold responsibilities within the party are pushing boundaries, as he said, and this is directly associated with the increasing discord. He also regretted that the failure of the top leadership to build trust is pushing the grassroots workers onto the lifeboat, a development that might be very problematic for the future of the party as far as future elections are concerned.

To make his outburst the more interesting, Patra also said that he was perplexed by a mysterious saying that has been floating around the political circles: ‘I am down but not out.’ ‘I have no idea what that is,’ he quipped, and this implied that only the one saying it and the one to whom it was said would know what it really means. This oblique allusion has led to the rumours of the power gambit within the BJD, particularly since some of the recent losses.

The MLA comments were even on the buzz of the possible inclusion of bureaucrat Sujata Kartikeyan into the BJD. Ignoring the fear of the lack of space in such a large party, Patra pointed at the necessity of openness of roles and responsibilities. When a large organisation is involved, he said, there are more that can be accommodated, but everybody should be aware of how to behave, what to do, and what to shoulder. He admitted that growth may be controversial but emphasised that boundaries need to be respected in order to achieve harmony. Everything would fall in place in case limits are understood. However, violating them is only going to increase conflicts, Patra said.

Patra also wrote to the present generation of party functionalists a sharp message of reflection on the bottom-up consequences of their actions. Those who are in positions of responsibility today need to realise this fact. Their decisions must be considered in terms of their acceptability at the grassroots level, he said and emphasised that their ultimate validation must be made on the ground and not in these ivory towers of leadership.

What Patra says is at a time when the BJD is sailing through turbulent seas following its literary flattening in the recent assembly elections, with talk of factionalism becoming increasingly vociferous. Analysts think that his vocal position may be the catalyst for much-needed reform, or the rift may become even more pronounced, as the party continues to struggle to restore its cadres’ morale.

With the Odisha political scene blaring with heat, everyone waits to watch how the BJD top management will respond to this insider attack, which exposes the dilemma of finding the balance between ambition, loyalty and discipline in an emerging regional powerhouse.

The ongoing Income Tax Department raids targeting the family of late Odisha Health Minister Naba Kishore Das have entered their fifth day, intensifying political unease in Western Odisha. The operations, which began on June 19, have led to unrest among Das’s loyalists and exposed growing fractures within the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

A total of 19 locations have been searched so far—including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bhubaneswar, and Delhi—focusing on alleged tax evasion linked to coal and ash transport businesses operated by Das’s family and associate Sanjay Nanda.

Massive Search Operation Targets Das’s Immediate Family

The raids have involved 220 officials, a scientific team, and 40 CRPF personnel. Properties linked to Das’s wife Minati, his brother and contractor Braja Kishore Das, daughter Deepali Das, and son Bishal Das were searched extensively. This marks the third such operation in 2024, following previous raids in January and ahead of the general elections.

Supporters Voice Anger Over BJD’s Silence

The raids have triggered resentment among Das’s supporters, especially those involved in the 2023 Jharsuguda by-election, where his daughter Deepali contested. Frustration spilled onto social media platforms and WhatsApp groups tied to Team Deepali Das, Jharsuguda Zilla Parishad BJD, and Jharsuguda Municipality BJD. Many supporters questioned why the BJD leadership, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, remained silent.

“Our leader’s son Bishal is under pressure from the BJP government, yet the BJD has not spoken up,” read one message. Calls to exit the BJD gained traction, with some users suggesting Deepali and Bishal might switch to Congress, where Naba Das had once been a prominent figure before joining the BJD in 2019.

Local Leaders and Opposition React

Jharsuguda BJD president Harish Ganatra declined to comment directly on the raids, stating that it was inappropriate to speak while the matter was ongoing. He also dismissed speculation about Deepali or Bishal leaving the party, calling it unfounded.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Sura Routray criticized the raids as politically motivated and undemocratic. His comments were widely welcomed by Das’s supporters, further fuelling speculation of a possible shift in political loyalties.

Legacy of Naba Das and Political Repercussions

The raids come amid renewed attention to the legacy of Naba Kishore Das, who was assassinated by a police officer on January 29, 2023, in Brajrajnagar. The Odisha Police reopened the investigation in March 2025 following a request from the Das family during a meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The silence from the BJD high command is deepening tensions with Das’s support base, who perceive the raids as targeted harassment under the BJP-led state government. With Deepali Das emerging as a political force in Jharsuguda, these developments could significantly reshape the region’s political landscape and diminish the BJD’s influence in Western Odisha.
