On Tuesday, party supremo Naveen Patnaik appointed Ipsita Sahu as president of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) and Chinmaya Sahu as the new leader of the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD). Political observers believe these strategic organisational appointments are part of a broader effort to strengthen the party before upcoming electoral battles.

Snehangini Chhuria

Former BMJD president and ex-MLA of Attabira, Snehangini Chhuria remains a formidable candidate despite her defeat in the recent general elections. Her past experience in mobilising women cadres and reputation as a seasoned organiser could pave the way for a comeback.

Lekhasree Samantsinghar

Once a BJP leader and now a high-profile BJD voice, Lekhasree Samantsinghar contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Balasore but lost to BJP’s Pratap Sarangi. Known for her sharp oratory and strong media presence, she is widely seen as the “dark horse” in the race.

Sharmistha Sethy

Former Jajpur MP Sharmistha Sethy also figures prominently in the race despite her 2024 electoral loss. Her narrow defeat and continued engagement with party activities have kept her relevant, making her a serious contender for the BMJD leadership.
