Historic Political Shift in Bengal

West Bengal has witnessed a major political transformation as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed its government in the state for the first time since Independence.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the BJP secured a historic victory by winning 207 seats, paving the way for the party’s entry into power in Bengal.

On Saturday, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal during a grand swearing-in ceremony held in Kolkata. Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, party workers and thousands of supporters from across the state.

PM Modi’s Gesture Becomes Talking Point

One of the most discussed moments of the ceremony came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi bowed before the massive gathering and paid tribute to the people of Bengal.

Videos from the event quickly went viral on social media, showing the Prime Minister greeting the crowd with folded hands before going down on his knees in a gesture of gratitude and respect toward the people of the state.

Political observers described the moment as symbolic, with Modi acknowledging what BJP leaders are calling a historic mandate from the people of Bengal.

Many supporters compared the gesture to the reverence shown by devotees in temples, saying the Prime Minister expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the electorate for giving BJP its first opportunity to govern the state.

Reminder of Modi’s 2014 Parliament Gesture

The scene also reminded many of a similar moment from 2014, when Narendra Modi had bowed before the Parliament building before entering it for the first time as Prime Minister after the Lok Sabha elections.

At that time, Modi had described Parliament as the “temple of democracy” and had touched the steps of the building as a mark of respect.

Supporters on social media drew parallels between the two moments, calling the Bengal gesture another symbolic expression of humility and respect for democratic institutions and public mandate.

Beginning of a New Political Era in Bengal

BJP leaders hailed the victory as the beginning of a new political era in West Bengal. According to party leaders, the electoral result reflects a major shift in the state’s political mood and signals growing support for the saffron party across Bengal.

The formation of the BJP government is also being projected as a landmark moment in the party’s long political journey in the state, which had traditionally been dominated by the Left Front and later the Trinamool Congress.
