Violent Attack on Senior OAS Officer

Bhubaneswar witnessed high political drama and widespread condemnation on Monday after a group allegedly led by BJP corporators assaulted a senior Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer in broad daylight. Ratnakar Sahu, Additional Commissioner of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), was attacked in his office around 11:30 AM while addressing public grievances.

Eyewitnesses say a group of 6–7 individuals barged into his chamber, physically assaulted him, smeared him with blood, and forcefully dragged him into a car. Allegedly, they also compelled him to apologize to a political figure and stole his mobile phone.

Three BJP Corporators Arrested

Following Sahu’s complaint at the Kharavela Nagar police station, authorities launched a swift crackdown. Police arrested three BJP corporators—Jiban Raut (Ward 29), Rashmi Mahapatra, and Debashish Pradhan—in connection with the attack. Officials indicated that more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses. The incident has sparked serious concerns over the safety of state officials and administrative personnel.

BJD Leads Massive Protest, Demands Mastermind’s Arrest

The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) strongly reacted to the incident. Led by prominent leaders such as Ashok Chandra Panda, Arun Sahu, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Sanjay Dasburma, Ananta Narayan Jena, and Mayor Sulochana Das, the party organized a road blockade on Bhubaneswar’s Janpath Road. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the alleged mastermind, a senior BJP leader.

As police tried to control the situation, several BJD members were detained during the demonstration. Party leaders condemned the attack, calling it an attack on democracy and governance.

Naveen Patnaik Condemns, Urges Swift Justice

Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took to social media to express strong disapproval. Calling the act “deeply condemnable,” he urged the current Chief Minister Mohan Majhi to ensure strict action against both the attackers and their political supporters.

Referring to past lapses in justice, Patnaik cautioned the government not to repeat previous inaction, including in high-profile cases like that involving a former governor’s son. He assured the public that no slackness would be tolerated in this case.

BMC Staff Protest in Solidarity

In a rare show of solidarity, BMC employees launched a sit-in protest demanding justice for Ratnakar Sahu. The protest added further pressure on the administration to act swiftly and transparently.

BJP Distances Itself, But Controversy Brews

Responding to the incident, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi (BJP) described the assault as “heinous” and asserted that such acts are neither supported by the BJP nor by the government. She called for strict legal and party-level action against those found guilty.

However, BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan stirred controversy by suggesting that Sahu’s communication style may have contributed to the altercation. His remarks drew criticism for appearing to justify violence against a government officer.

Backdrop of Political Tensions

The incident comes amid heightened political sensitivity in Odisha, where the BJP recently came to power, campaigning on promises to eliminate bureaucratic high-handedness or “babu raj.” Ironically, critics now accuse the ruling party of encouraging lawlessness under the guise of reform.
