Modi’s “Ganga Remark” Turns Political Reality

Following the NDA’s victory in Bihar last November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remarked that the Ganga flows from Bihar into Bengal—widely seen as a political signal ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Just five months later, that remark appears to have materialised into a major political shift, with the BJP capturing power in the state.

Landslide Win for BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a commanding majority, winning close to 200 seats in the 294-member Assembly. In contrast, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been reduced to double digits.
This marks a historic victory for the BJP and brings an end to the TMC’s 15-year rule in West Bengal.

Exit Polls: Mixed Predictions, Clear Outcome

Pre-election exit polls had largely projected a BJP victory. Five agencies estimated the party would win between 146 and 192 seats. However, two pollsters predicted a strong comeback for Mamata Banerjee, with projections crossing 220 seats for TMC.
The final results, however, have decisively contradicted those expectations, delivering a clear mandate in favour of the BJP.

BJP Expands Across Key Regions

The BJP performed strongly in North Bengal, reinforcing its position as a key stronghold. The party also made significant gains in areas traditionally dominated by TMC.

• In Medinipur, BJP secured notable tribal support.
• In Bardhaman, another major TMC stronghold, BJP made decisive gains.
• Urban centres like Kolkata and Howrah witnessed a clear shift towards the BJP.

The Presidency region also saw a strong wave in favour of the party.

Key Battleground Highlights

Despite the overall setback, TMC managed to retain some pockets:

• Malda continues to favour TMC despite voter list revisions.
• In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee is leading by over 17,000 votes, holding on to her core support base.

BJP Calls It an “Election of Rejection”

Commenting on the outcome, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar described the election as an “election of rejection.”
He pointed to several factors behind TMC’s defeat, including:

• Teacher recruitment scandal
• Rising unemployment
• Allegations of widespread corruption

Campaign Narratives and Voter Sentiment

The BJP alleged that Mamata Banerjee’s focus on minority appeasement alienated a section of voters.
Meanwhile, TMC centred its campaign on regional identity, promoting slogans like “Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chay” (Bengal wants its own daughter). Mamata Banerjee had also warned that a BJP victory could lead to restrictions on non-vegetarian food, including fish, which is central to Bengali culture.

To counter this, BJP leaders publicly consumed fish during campaign events. However, voters appeared more influenced by issues such as unemployment, governance concerns, and corruption.

A Turning Point in West Bengal Politics

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. With a decisive mandate, the BJP is set to form the government, signalling a major change in voter sentiment across the state.
