<p data-start="224" data-end="607">Following the NDA’s victory in Bihar last November, Prime Minister <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Narendra Modi</span></span> had remarked that the Ganga flows from Bihar into Bengal—widely seen as a political signal ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Just five months later, that remark appears to have materialised into a major political shift, with the BJP capturing power in the state.</p>
<h3 data-section-id="1thrd45" data-start="609" data-end="636">Landslide Win for BJP</h3>
<p data-start="637" data-end="1021">The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a commanding majority, winning close to 200 seats in the 294-member Assembly. In contrast, the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">All India Trinamool Congress</span></span> (TMC), led by Chief Minister <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Mamata Banerjee</span></span>, has been reduced to double digits.<br data-start="917" data-end="920" />This marks a historic victory for the BJP and brings an end to the TMC’s 15-year rule in West Bengal.</p>
<h3 data-section-id="ywlcus" data-start="1023" data-end="1073">Exit Polls: Mixed Predictions, Clear Outcome</h3>
<p data-start="1074" data-end="1450">Pre-election exit polls had largely projected a BJP victory. Five agencies estimated the party would win between 146 and 192 seats. However, two pollsters predicted a strong comeback for Mamata Banerjee, with projections crossing 220 seats for TMC.<br data-start="1322" data-end="1325" />The final results, however, have decisively contradicted those expectations, delivering a clear mandate in favour of the BJP.</p>
<h3 data-section-id="1x3tp8o" data-start="1452" data-end="1488">BJP Expands Across Key Regions</h3>
<p data-start="1489" data-end="1659">The BJP performed strongly in North Bengal, reinforcing its position as a key stronghold. The party also made significant gains in areas traditionally dominated by TMC.</p>
<ul data-start="1660" data-end="1930">
<li data-section-id="1nh0p7n" data-start="1660" data-end="1713">In Medinipur, BJP secured notable tribal support.</li>
<li data-section-id="13e1qdo" data-start="1714" data-end="1786">In Bardhaman, another major TMC stronghold, BJP made decisive gains.</li>
<li data-section-id="1sylyf9" data-start="1787" data-end="1930">Urban centres like <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Kolkata</span></span> and <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Howrah</span></span> witnessed a clear shift towards the BJP.</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1932" data-end="2000">The Presidency region also saw a strong wave in favour of the party.</p>
<h3 data-section-id="qbz3od" data-start="2002" data-end="2035">Key Battleground Highlights</h3>
<p data-start="2036" data-end="2102">Despite the overall setback, TMC managed to retain some pockets:</p>
<ul data-start="2103" data-end="2269">
<li data-section-id="himiwb" data-start="2103" data-end="2166">Malda continues to favour TMC despite voter list revisions.</li>
<li data-section-id="cj66k5" data-start="2167" data-end="2269">In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee is leading by over 17,000 votes, holding on to her core support base.</li>
</ul>
<h3 data-section-id="msdkv5" data-start="2271" data-end="2316">BJP Calls It an “Election of Rejection”</h3>
<p data-start="2317" data-end="2521">Commenting on the outcome, state BJP president <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Sukanta Majumdar</span></span> described the election as an “election of rejection.”<br data-start="2455" data-end="2458" />He pointed to several factors behind TMC’s defeat, including:</p>
<ul data-start="2522" data-end="2618">
<li data-section-id="16ooaem" data-start="2522" data-end="2553">Teacher recruitment scandal</li>
<li data-section-id="wftix7" data-start="2554" data-end="2577">Rising unemployment</li>
<li data-section-id="aof7nb" data-start="2578" data-end="2618">Allegations of widespread corruption</li>
</ul>
<h3 data-section-id="5jjxvx" data-start="2620" data-end="2665">Campaign Narratives and Voter Sentiment</h3>
<p data-start="2666" data-end="3066">The BJP alleged that Mamata Banerjee’s focus on minority appeasement alienated a section of voters.<br data-start="2765" data-end="2768" />Meanwhile, TMC centred its campaign on regional identity, promoting slogans like “Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chay” (Bengal wants its own daughter). Mamata Banerjee had also warned that a BJP victory could lead to restrictions on non-vegetarian food, including fish, which is central to Bengali culture.</p>
<p data-start="3068" data-end="3253">To counter this, BJP leaders publicly consumed fish during campaign events. However, voters appeared more influenced by issues such as unemployment, governance concerns, and corruption.</p>
<h3 data-section-id="ncb7v4" data-start="3255" data-end="3300">A Turning Point in West Bengal Politics</h3>
<p data-start="3301" data-end="3528">The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. With a decisive mandate, the BJP is set to form the government, signalling a major change in voter sentiment across the state.</p>
