In a significant move aimed at strengthening Odisha’s healthcare system and improving access to quality medical services, the state government has approved the creation of 755 new posts across government medical colleges and healthcare institutions.

The decision is expected to enhance both medical education and patient care by addressing manpower shortages in teaching and clinical services. It reflects the government’s continued focus on expanding healthcare infrastructure and improving the quality of medical training in the state.

New Posts Across Teaching and Clinical Departments

The newly sanctioned positions include:

• 7 Professors
• 35 Associate Professors
• 50 Assistant Professors
• 29 Tutors
• 248 Senior Residents
• 190 Junior Residents (MBBS)
• 112 Casualty Medical Officers (CMOs)
• 84 Blood Bank Officers (BBOs)

Once these positions are filled, medical colleges will witness a substantial increase in the availability of faculty members and healthcare professionals, improving both academic standards and patient services.

Government Focused on Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure

Speaking on the development, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the state government has accorded top priority to the healthcare sector.

He stated that the government is committed to providing better healthcare facilities to the people while simultaneously strengthening the foundations of medical education. The approval of these additional posts will help ensure adequate human resources in medical colleges and hospitals, leading to improved healthcare delivery across Odisha.

Expansion of Medical Education Creates Need for Additional Faculty

The move comes in the wake of recent expansion in medical education facilities across the state. Three new medical colleges have increased the state’s MBBS intake capacity by 250 seats, while postgraduate (PG) seats have also risen significantly, reaching 68 additional seats.

With the increase in undergraduate and postgraduate admissions, the need for more professors, teaching faculty, and clinical staff had become essential. The newly approved posts are expected to meet these growing requirements and ensure compliance with medical education standards.

Better Healthcare Outcomes Expected

The government believes that the recruitment of additional faculty and healthcare professionals will not only improve the quality of medical education but also enhance patient care in government hospitals attached to medical colleges.

Officials expect the decision to reduce workload on existing staff, improve emergency services, strengthen blood bank operations, and provide better supervision and training for medical students.
