In a bid to promote social harmony and reduce caste-based barriers, the Indian government is offering ₹2.5 lakh to inter-caste couples under the Dr Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration Through Inter-Caste Marriages. The initiative, implemented by the Dr Ambedkar Foundation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to encourage unions that bridge the caste divide.

Scheme Designed to Promote Social Integration

The programme supports couples in which one partner belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and the other to a non-SC community. Officials say the scheme seeks to “break caste walls” and promote integration through marriages rooted in equality and mutual respect.

The marriage must be legally registered, and couples must apply within one year of tying the knot.

Financial Benefits Split for Present and Future Support

Under the scheme, ₹1.5 lakh is transferred directly into the couple’s joint bank account, while the remaining ₹1 lakh is placed in a fixed deposit to ensure future financial stability.

Applicants must submit essential documents including their marriage certificate, Aadhaar cards, caste certificates, and bank details.

A significant modification in 2017 removed the earlier income ceiling of ₹5 lakh per annum, making the scheme accessible to all eligible couples irrespective of their financial status.

Low Awareness and Strict Verification Affect Uptake

Despite its social importance, the scheme has seen only 116 beneficiaries in three years, largely due to rigorous verification procedures and low awareness among eligible couples.

Officials acknowledge that the target of supporting 500 couples annually has not been met, prompting the government to step up its promotional efforts.

A Step Toward Reducing Caste Barriers

As caste continues to influence social relationships across India, the government views this initiative as a meaningful step toward national integration through inter-caste harmony. Authorities hope that improved awareness and easier access will encourage more couples to benefit from the scheme.
