India may witness widespread disruptions on Thursday, February 12, as a joint platform of ten major central trade unions has called for a nationwide general strike, or Bharat Bandh. Union leaders claim that more than 30 crore workers across various sectors are likely to participate in the protest.

The bandh is expected to impact banking services, public transport, industries, markets, and several government offices in different parts of the country.

Why Have Unions Called the Strike?

The strike is being organized in protest against what trade unions describe as the Centre’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate” policies. The movement has received support from farmers’ groups such as the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and opposition parties including the Congress, CPI(M), and CPI.

Union leaders argue that recent policy decisions threaten workers’ rights and farmers’ livelihoods.

Opposition to New Labour Codes

A major point of contention is the implementation of four new labour codes, which consolidated 29 existing labour laws. Trade unions allege that these codes weaken workers’ rights, reduce job security, and dilute social protection measures.

One of the primary demands of the protesting unions is the immediate repeal of these labour codes.

Concerns Over Privatisation and Trade Policies

Apart from labour reforms, unions are opposing privatisation efforts, the Electricity Amendment Bill, and proposed changes to agricultural laws. Protesters have also raised objections to the recent India-US interim trade framework, claiming it may harm domestic industries and national interests.

The strike call has been jointly given by major central trade unions including:

• AICCTU

• UTUC

Banking sector unions such as AIBEA, AIBOA, and BEFI have also announced their participation, raising concerns about possible disruptions in public sector bank operations.

Possible Disruptions Across Sectors

Depending on the scale of participation, services that could be affected include:

• Banking operations

• Public transport

• Rail services in select regions

• Industrial production

• Schools and colleges

• Markets and private businesses

However, hospitals and emergency services are expected to function normally.

Security Measures in Place

Authorities in several states have heightened security arrangements to maintain law and order. Officials have urged citizens to remain calm and ensure that essential services continue without interruption.

Growing Discontent Over Economic Policies

Trade union leaders, including AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur, have stated that the expected massive participation will send a strong message against recent labour and economic reforms.

While the full impact of the Bharat Bandh will only become clear on Thursday, the nationwide call reflects growing dissatisfaction among workers and farmers over economic policies affecting millions across the country.
