Although several parts of Odisha have been receiving rainfall, residents continue to struggle with oppressive humidity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the uncomfortable weather is likely to persist for the next 48 hours, while warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several districts.

The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Kandhamal, where heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 40–50 kmph is expected over the next 24 hours.

Yellow Warning for 15 Districts

The IMD has also issued a Yellow Warning for Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Boudh, Subarnapur (Sonepur), Balangir and Nuapada.

These districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph.

The department has indicated that rainfall activity is expected to continue across Odisha until July 4.

Low-Pressure Area Likely to Form Over Bay of Bengal

Weather experts have forecast the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the west-central to northwest Bay of Bengal between July 1 and July 3. The system is expected to gradually develop into a low-pressure area, though the chances of it intensifying into a strong depression remain relatively low at present.

Meteorologist Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak said the southwest monsoon is currently in a weak phase. However, global weather models indicate that monsoon activity is likely to strengthen during the first week of July.

Rainfall Expected to Increase Gradually

According to Prof. Pasupalak, rainfall will increase gradually rather than arriving in one intense spell.

Between July 1 and July 7, southern and coastal Odisha are expected to receive enhanced rainfall first, followed by central and northern Odisha. Western Odisha may have to wait longer for widespread rainfall suitable for agricultural activities.

He advised farmers not to expect a sudden revival of the monsoon but to prepare for a gradual increase in rainfall. More favourable conditions for cultivation are expected during the first and second weeks of July.

Possibility of Depression Around July 3–4

Some weather forecasts also suggest that the proposed low-pressure area could strengthen further after its formation. It may intensify into a depression on July 3 and potentially a deep depression by July 4, resulting in widespread heavy rainfall across Odisha.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the evolving weather system, and residents, particularly those in vulnerable districts, have been advised to stay updated with official forecasts and follow safety advisories issued by the authorities.
