A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression and subsequently a deep depression within the next 48 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system is expected to move west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast.

The weather system is likely to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to several parts of Odisha, particularly the southern and coastal districts. The IMD has issued an extremely heavy rainfall warning for Odisha on September 23 and 24.

Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds

Koraput and Malkangiri are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada may receive heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. The adverse weather could increase the risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has issued a red warning for Ganjam and several other districts for September 23 and 24. Squally winds of around 55-65 kmph, with higher gusts, are also expected along the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Ganjam Administration Steps Up Preparedness

Ganjam Collector V. Keertivasan said the district administration has already started precautionary measures in view of the approaching weather system.

People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during thunderstorms and lightning. The Collector has also urged farmers not to enter agricultural fields for the next three to four days due to the risk of lightning.

Vulnerable areas prone to flooding and waterlogging have been identified, while cyclone and flood shelters across all blocks have been kept ready. If required, people living near rivers and coastal areas will be shifted to safer locations.

The administration is closely monitoring areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides and has kept various departments and emergency response teams on alert.

The weather department has issued a yellow warning for gusty winds of 30 to 50 kmph during periods of rainfall. Along the Odisha coast, winds are expected to reach 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 60 kmph. Fishermen have therefore been advised not to venture into the sea today.

According to the weather department, rainfall activity is expected to decrease after September 12, with conditions gradually returning to normal.

Meanwhile, the Kalahandi district administration has announced the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres tomorrow in view of the persistent heavy rainfall. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and children amid the adverse weather conditions.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha from August 29 to September 1, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall also possible.

The system developed under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that had been active over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas. The weather system is expected to keep rainfall activity high across the state through the beginning of September.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued

For Saturday, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj have been placed under an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Puri, Khordha, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda.

Thunderstorm and Squally Winds

Several districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Winds may reach 40–50 kmph, with stronger gusts possible in some areas.

Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh have been placed under a Yellow Alert for thunderstorm and lightning activity.

For August 30, Mayurbhanj is expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall and has been placed under a Red Alert. Orange Alerts have been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal.

Strong Winds Along Odisha Coast

Coastal Odisha is likely to experience winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching around 60 kmph. With the sea expected to remain rough, fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea until August 31.

Balasore’s Khaira recorded the highest rainfall in the state during the previous 24 hours.

Odisha has already received 1,111.4 mm of rainfall since June 1, which is around 26% above normal, according to the rainfall figures cited in the report. The latest IMD forecast indicates that the active weather system will keep rainfall activity elevated across Odisha in the coming days.

The developing weather system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across Odisha. The state is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next five days, according to the forecast.

Orange Alert for Three Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Alert for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall until 8:30 AM tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Koraput and Malkangiri for heavy rainfall.

Odisha is likely to witness another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall as a cyclonic circulation over the region is expected to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.

According to the weather forecast, several parts of the state may experience intense rainfall for the next two days, while rain is likely to continue for around five days. The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for six districts — Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Bargarh — forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, Subarnapur, Balangir and Nuapada for heavy rainfall.

The remaining districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, prompting a Yellow Warning.

Low-Pressure Area Likely to Develop

A cyclonic circulation is currently lying over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. The system extends up to around 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilted southwards.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of the northwestern Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

Another upper-air cyclonic circulation is persisting over Jharkhand and adjoining areas at around 1.5 km above mean sea level. The combined weather systems are expected to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha for several days.

The state is likely to remain under the influence of the weather system until August 11, with warnings issued for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Strong Winds, Rough Sea; Fishermen Advised Not to Venture Out

Coastal areas of Odisha are also likely to experience strong winds. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, making the sea conditions rough.

In view of the adverse weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Odisha’s Monsoon Rainfall Already 26% Above Normal

Odisha has already recorded more than 800 mm of rainfall this monsoon.

Between June 1 and August 7, the state recorded 814 mm of rainfall, against the normal rainfall of 643 mm for the period. This represents a 26% surplus over normal rainfall.

The fresh weather system comes at a time when several parts of northern Odisha are still struggling with the impact of recent floods.

Flood Situation Remains a Concern in North Odisha

The flood situation in northern Odisha has not completely improved, with several areas still remaining waterlogged.

The Salandi River is rising rapidly, while the Jalaka River is flowing above the danger mark. The water level of the Baitarani River is also moving closer to its danger mark.

Meanwhile, the Brahmani and Subarnarekha rivers are also gradually rising.

With more heavy rainfall forecast over the next few days, authorities and residents in flood-prone areas remain on alert. The fresh spell of rain could further worsen waterlogging and flood conditions in already affected districts.

The Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire state of Odisha on Tuesday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar. Under the influence of the active monsoon system, several parts of the state are expected to receive rainfall for the next five days.

While some districts may witness heavy rainfall, several other areas are likely to experience thunderstorms and Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity. The weather department has predicted Kalbaisakhi rainfall activity until June 25.

Heavy Rain Likely in Southern Odisha

The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall in several districts, especially in southern Odisha, on June 26 and 27. The monsoon activity is expected to remain strong during this period, bringing relief from heat conditions across the state.

Low Pressure Area Likely in Early July

A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts around June 25. Due to its influence, rainfall is expected in southern Odisha.

Another cyclonic circulation may develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around June 29, which could intensify into a low-pressure area. According to SOA CEC chief Sarat Chandra Sahu, a low-pressure system may form between July 2 and July 4.

The system is likely to bring widespread rainfall across most parts of Odisha during the first week of July. The state may witness good rainfall activity during this period.

Kalbaisakhi Activity Continues, Yellow Alert Issued

Due to prevailing heat conditions in interior Odisha, Kalbaisakhi activity is likely to continue in several districts. The Meteorological Centre has issued a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain conditions until June 25.

According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, there is no major change expected in the maximum daytime temperature across Odisha during the next six to seven days.

Strong Winds Along Coast, Fishermen Advised Caution

Coastal Odisha may experience strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. The sea condition is expected to remain rough on June 23 and 24.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea during these two days due to unsafe weather conditions.

The southwest monsoon is steadily advancing towards Odisha, with weather conditions remaining favourable for its further progress into parts of the state within the next three to four days. The information was shared by Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

While Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms have provided temporary relief from the scorching heat and humidity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued thunderstorm activity across most parts of the state over the next 24 hours.

Orange Alert for Eight Districts

The IMD has issued thunderstorm warnings for 26 districts, excluding Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for the remaining 17 districts, where thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected.

Heatwave Conditions Likely to Persist

Despite intermittent rainfall, the weather department has cautioned that residents may not get immediate relief from the prevailing heat. Temperatures across Odisha are expected to rise by as much as three degrees Celsius over the next three days.

Coastal and southern Odisha are likely to experience severe heat and uncomfortable humidity levels, making conditions oppressive for residents.

On Sunday, temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state, including Bhubaneswar and many locations in western Odisha. Hot winds swept across the region from late morning before weather conditions changed dramatically in the afternoon.

Kalbaisakhi Brings Rain and Strong Winds

Several coastal districts, including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Paradip and Balasore, witnessed heavy rain and strong winds under the influence of Kalbaisakhi storms. Intense lightning and thunder accompanied the showers, causing concern among residents.

Boudh recorded the highest daytime temperature in the state at 41.9 degrees Celsius. Titlagarh registered 41.7 degrees Celsius, while Bhawanipatna and Nayagarh recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius each. Talcher reported 41 degrees Celsius, while Balangir, Sambalpur and Sonepur recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon Likely to Enter Odisha Between June 10 and 13

Senior agrometeorologist Professor Surendranath Pasupalak has predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Odisha between June 10 and June 13.

According to him, monsoon activity over the Bay of Bengal had been relatively slow in recent weeks. However, significant improvement has been observed over the past two days, with the monsoon advancing further and moisture-laden winds spreading towards Odisha.

The changing weather pattern across coastal and southern Odisha, marked by frequent thunderstorms and rainfall, indicates favourable conditions for monsoon onset.

Rainfall Activity Expected to Increase

Professor Pasupalak noted that cloud cover is expected to increase between now and June 10, leading to higher humidity levels and more frequent thunderstorm activity.

As monsoon conditions strengthen, temperatures are likely to gradually decline. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify between June 12 and June 15 under the direct influence of the southwest monsoon.

Western Odisha, however, may have to wait slightly longer. The monsoon is expected to reach the region between June 12 and June 16, with widespread monsoon rains likely between June 15 and June 18.

Until then, residents of western Odisha are expected to continue experiencing intense heat, with significant relief unlikely before June 10.

Jharsuguda Records Highest Temperature at 44.8°C

Odisha continues to suffer under intense heatwave conditions as temperatures and humidity levels reached dangerous levels across the state on Tuesday. While western Odisha is witnessing extreme heat, coastal districts are struggling with severe humid conditions and unbearable discomfort.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature in the state at 44.8 degrees Celsius.

As many as 21 cities across Odisha reported temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Several Districts Cross 42°C Mark

Other major temperature recordings in the state include:

• Hirakud – 44°C
• Angul and Sambalpur – 43.6°C
• Boudh and Talcher – 43°C
• Sonepur – 42.6°C
• Titlagarh – 42.3°C
• Balangir – 42.2°C

The weather department has warned that temperatures may rise by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius from Wednesday onward.

Coastal Odisha Faces Severe Humidity

Along with rising temperatures, high humidity levels have worsened conditions in coastal districts, making the weather extremely uncomfortable for residents.

The Meteorological Centre has predicted intense heat and humid weather in the districts of:

• Jajpur
• Kendrapara
• Cuttack
• Jagatsinghpur
• Puri
• Khordha
• Nayagarh
• Ganjam
• Gajapati
• Angul

A Yellow Warning has been issued for these districts due to the prevailing heat and humidity conditions.

Thunderstorm and Kalbaisakhi Alert Issued

At the same time, the weather department has also issued an Orange Warning for thunderstorms, lightning and Kalbaisakhi rain in several districts.
