Colombia Visit Sparks Controversy
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Colombia, has stirred political debates by commenting on India’s democracy and India-China relations. Speaking at an event organized by the IE University in Colombia, Gandhi claimed that India’s democratic system is under attack. He emphasized that India cannot suppress its citizens like China and highlighted the importance of preserving space for diverse religions, languages, and traditions within the country.

On India-China Relations
When asked whether India is preparing to assume global leadership in the next 50 years like China, Rahul Gandhi responded that he did not have insights on China but expressed confidence in India’s capabilities. He stated that India is a neighbor to China and a close ally of the United States. While acknowledging India’s potential contributions to the world, Gandhi warned of internal challenges, particularly attacks on democratic institutions, which must be addressed for the country to progress.

Preserving Diversity in India
Rahul Gandhi also highlighted the importance of giving space to India’s diverse traditions, religions, and languages, noting that the country cannot adopt China’s authoritarian methods. He stressed that maintaining a democratic system is the best way to ensure representation and inclusion for all communities, and hinted that significant changes may be imminent.

BJP Reacts Strongly
The remarks drew sharp criticism from the ruling BJP. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad attacked Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, saying that while it would have been better if Gandhi had extended festive greetings to the nation during Vijayadashami, he instead chose to attack the country. Prasad accused Gandhi of making baseless statements about India both domestically and abroad, and stated that anyone insulting India internationally should not expect to hold public office in the country. The BJP strongly condemned Gandhi’s comments.
