Tensions in the Middle East have escalated after Iran reportedly attacked the Cyprus-flagged commercial vessel GFS Galaxy near the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman. The attack triggered a fire on board the ship, prompting an emergency rescue operation.

According to official information, 11 Indian nationals were among the crew members on the vessel. While 10 Indians have been rescued safely, one Indian citizen remains missing, and search operations are continuing.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep concern over the incident and strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel. The Indian Embassy in Oman is working closely with local authorities to locate the missing crew member and provide assistance to those rescued.

Iran has reportedly defended its action, claiming that the vessel was sailing through an “unauthorised” route, prompting the military intervention. Following the incident, Iran is reported to have shut the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil shipping routes, further heightening regional tensions.

The latest developments have also led to reports of retaliatory military action by the United States, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Gulf region. The situation has significantly increased geopolitical uncertainty across the Middle East.

India has urged all parties to refrain from targeting commercial shipping and civilians, stressing the importance of adhering to international law. The government has also called for immediate dialogue and diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) warned that Iran would face serious consequences for repeated attacks on commercial vessels despite multiple warnings, underscoring the growing international concern over maritime security in the Gulf.
