The Indian National Congress on Tuesday suspended three of its MLAs for allegedly cross-voting against the party whip during the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha. The disciplinary action comes amid growing turmoil within the party following an unexpected electoral setback.

Three MLAs Face Suspension

The suspended legislators include Sophia Firdous, Ramesh Jena, and Dasarathi Gamang. According to party sources, the trio defied the official party directive and voted in favour of the BJP-backed candidate, triggering strict action from the leadership.

In addition, the party removed Giribala Behera from her position as president of the Cuttack City Congress unit for alleged anti-party activities.

Congress Alleges Horse-Trading

Addressing a press conference, the party’s media cell chief claimed that the Congress had worked closely with the Biju Janata Dal to secure victory in the Rajya Sabha polls. However, the effort fell short due to alleged cross-voting by some MLAs.

The party further alleged that “horse-trading” played a role in influencing certain legislators, including women MLAs. It warned that the suspensions are only the initial step and that stricter actions, including expulsion, may follow.

Internal Rift Deepens

The controversy has exposed deep divisions within the state unit of the Congress. The leadership’s strong response indicates concerns over indiscipline and internal dissent at a critical political juncture.

Dasarathi Gamang Hits Back at Party Leadership

Suspended MLA Dasarathi Gamang strongly reacted to the party’s decision, launching a scathing attack on the state leadership. He claimed that he had informed the office of Rahul Gandhi about the internal issues and suggested changes in leadership.

Gamang asserted his long-standing loyalty to the party, highlighting his three decades of service, including two terms as chairman and two terms as MLA. He stated that he was not dependent on the mercy of PCC president Bhakta Das.

In a serious allegation, Gamang accused Bhakta Das of having business dealings worth ₹200 crore with the BJD, questioning the party’s narrative of labeling others as “sold.”

The developments have intensified political tensions in Odisha, with the Congress facing both electoral and internal challenges. The episode is expected to have long-term implications for party unity and its strategy in the state.
