The issue was a key focus during the association’s annual meeting held in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Association Raises Concerns Over Livelihoods

Members of the association expressed serious concern over the impact of the government’s decision on more than 2,000 licensed electrical contractors across Odisha. These contractors collectively provide employment to over 30,000 skilled and unskilled workers whose livelihoods depend on ongoing electrical projects.

According to the association, the termination of the Short Tender Notice has stalled several works, creating uncertainty for thousands of families dependent on the sector.

Public Services May Be Affected

The association emphasized that electrical services are an essential part of daily life and that contractors play a vital role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply. They warned that delays in project execution due to the cancellation could affect maintenance and development works, ultimately impacting public services.

Members stated that the Short Tender system allowed for timely execution of urgent electrical works, and its termination has disrupted this process.

Petition to Be Submitted to Government

In response to the decision, the association has prepared a formal petition addressed to the Chief Minister and former ministers. The petition urges the government to immediately reinstate the Short Tender Notice and protect the interests of local contractors.

One of the major demands raised during the meeting was to restrict participation of out-of-state contractors in Odisha-based projects. The association argued that such a step would help safeguard employment opportunities for local workers.

Concerns Over Tata Power’s Role

The meeting also witnessed discussions about what members described as the growing monopoly of Tata Power in the state. Participants expressed apprehension regarding the company’s operational approach and resolved to take up the matter with the government for further review.

Large Turnout at Annual Meeting

The annual gathering was held at the Institute of Engineers Conference Hall in Bhubaneswar and saw participation from more than 500 licensed electrical contractors from different parts of the state.

Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh attended as the chief guest, while Senior BJP Leader and Association Advisor Jagannath Pradhan delivered the keynote address.

Leadership Highlights Future Plans

Association President Ashish Som and Secretary Bhagwan Vishwal presented updates on ongoing initiatives and outlined future plans for the organization. A key announcement made during the meeting was the immediate commencement of construction of a new meeting hall and rest area for association members.

A Legacy of Service Since 1959

Founded in 1959, the All Odisha Electrical Contractors’ Association has a long history of working in coordination with the state government to support electrical infrastructure and public services. The association reiterated its commitment to continue serving the people of Odisha while safeguarding the interests of contractors and workers.
