A severe LPG shortage has led to long queues outside gas agencies across Odisha and several other parts of India. The crisis has disrupted household kitchens and forced hotels and restaurants to switch to firewood or reduce operations. With LPG supplies tightening, the demand for induction stoves has surged, raising fears of shortages in the electronics market as well.

A widespread shortage of LPG cylinders has triggered long queues across several parts of India, including Odisha, severely affecting households, hotels, and restaurants. People are lining up outside gas agencies for hours, hoping to receive their booked cylinders, while many are returning home empty-handed due to supply shortages.

Long Queues Outside Gas Agencies

In Odisha’s Kendrapara district, particularly in Rajkanika and Aali blocks, long queues have been seen outside LPG distribution offices. Residents have gathered in large numbers to collect cooking gas cylinders, but many claim that despite having prior bookings, they are being forced to return without receiving their cylinders.

Several consumers have also alleged that LPG cylinders are being sold at inflated prices, adding to the difficulties faced by households already dealing with supply disruptions.

Hotels Forced to Use Firewood

The shortage has also significantly impacted hotels and restaurants. In Balasore, many eateries have been forced to switch to traditional firewood for cooking as LPG supplies remain uncertain.

Hotel owners say they are trying to minimize the use of available gas cylinders and are relying more on ovens or alternative methods to manage cooking operations. According to several restaurant operators, the ongoing LPG shortage has made it difficult to maintain normal business activities.

Surge in Demand for Induction Stoves

As the gas shortage worsens, many households are turning to electric cooking options. The demand for induction stoves has surged sharply, with electronics stores witnessing heavy footfall from customers looking for alternatives to LPG.

Retailers say that due to the sudden spike in purchases, there is a possibility of induction stoves going out of stock soon. Some online platforms are already showing “out of stock” notices for several induction stove models.

Crisis Not Limited to Odisha

The LPG shortage is not confined to Odisha. Similar situations have been reported in several cities across the country, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Bhopal, where people are seen waiting in long lines outside gas agencies.

Impact on Food Service Industry

The disruption in LPG supply has also begun to affect cafeterias and food service operations in several companies. Cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata are witnessing interruptions in commercial LPG supply, making it difficult for restaurants and food outlets to operate smoothly.

Many restaurants and cloud kitchens are struggling to procure cylinders, forcing them to reduce menu options or limit their operations temporarily.

Bakeries and Food Delivery Platforms Hit

The shortage could have a major financial impact on the food industry. In Mumbai alone, nearly 2,500 to 3,000 bakeries are reportedly on the verge of shutting down due to the lack of LPG supply.

The slowdown in restaurant and cloud kitchen operations has also affected food delivery platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy. Industry sources suggest that food orders on these platforms have dropped by nearly 50–60 percent in some areas as restaurants struggle to operate amid the LPG shortage.

Experts warn that if the supply disruption continues, it could lead to higher operating costs for restaurants and cloud kitchens, ultimately affecting food prices and the broader hospitality sector.

Opposition members created a ruckus in the Odisha Assembly over the alleged LPG shortage during the Budget Session, forcing the House to be adjourned. While long queues were seen outside gas agencies across the state, officials assured that domestic LPG stocks are sufficient and only commercial cylinder supply has been temporarily disrupted.

The protest took place on the fourth day of the second phase of the Budget Session, disrupting normal proceedings in the House.

Amid loud sloganeering and protests by opposition MLAs, the Assembly could not function smoothly. As the situation worsened, Speaker Surama Padhy was forced to adjourn the House until 11:30 AM.

War Impact Triggers LPG Supply Concerns

The opposition claimed that the ongoing global conflict, particularly tensions between Iran and Israel, has begun affecting LPG supplies. Reports of gas shortages have created panic among consumers across the state.

Restaurants, street food vendors, and auto-rickshaw operators have reportedly been affected due to the limited availability of commercial LPG cylinders. Fearing further shortages, many residents are rushing to gas agencies to secure cylinders.

Long Queues Outside Gas Agencies

Customers have been seen standing in long queues outside gas distribution centres across the state. From the capital city Bhubaneswar to Malkangiri, similar scenes of crowding and anxiety have been reported.

However, gas distributors have clarified that there is currently no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders. According to distributors, the disruption mainly concerns commercial gas supplies, which has affected hotels and restaurants.

HP Gas distributor Pabitra Mohan Sahu stated that the existing stock of domestic LPG cylinders is sufficient for the next two to three months. He added that while commercial gas supply is temporarily halted, the issue is expected to be resolved soon.

Government Urges People Not to Panic

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg assured citizens that the state has adequate stock of cooking gas and urged people not to panic.

After a review meeting on the availability of LPG, petrol, and diesel, Garg said there is no shortage of fuel supplies in the state. She also confirmed that institutions such as hospitals and educational establishments are not facing any gas supply problems.

Oil companies have also assured that petrol and diesel supplies remain stable. Authorities have directed oil companies to maintain balance in the supply chain to prevent disruptions.

LPG Prices Rise Across the Country

Adding to public concern, the price of domestic LPG cylinders has recently increased. The cost of a 14.2 kg household LPG cylinder has gone up by ₹60 across the country.

The Union government has also instructed oil companies to increase LPG production using propane and butane gases. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that since LPG is widely used for cooking in most Indian households, ensuring uninterrupted supply is a top priority.

To boost production, refineries have been directed to use propane and butane specifically for LPG manufacturing and avoid using them for other petrochemical products.

The ongoing Middle East conflict has begun to impact household kitchens in India, with LPG supply concerns surfacing in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar. Long queues have been reported outside gas agencies as consumers complain of delayed deliveries for weeks. While authorities maintain that LPG stocks are sufficient and supply remains normal, panic booking and rumours of shortages have created an artificial crisis, leaving many households struggling to arrange cooking fuel.
