Mumbai residents are likely to face additional pressure on their household budgets ahead of Ganesh Puja and the upcoming festive season, with wholesale milk prices set to increase by ₹9 per litre.

The Bombay Milk Producers Association has announced a hike in the wholesale price of milk supplied across Mumbai and the surrounding metropolitan region. From September 1, 2026, the wholesale price will rise from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre.

According to the association, the revised price will remain in effect for six months, until February 28, 2027.

Rising Dairy Production Costs

Local dairy farmers have attributed the price hike to a sharp increase in essential cattle-rearing costs. Expenses related to cattle feed, green fodder, oil cake and transportation have reportedly increased significantly, putting additional pressure on milk producers.

With the wholesale price rising by ₹9 per litre, retailers, dairy shops and door-to-door milk suppliers are expected to pass on at least part of the additional cost to consumers from next week.

The impact is likely to extend beyond household milk consumption. Bakeries, sweet shops, restaurants and hotels that depend heavily on milk and other dairy products could also face higher operating costs.

Consumers may therefore see prices rise for several milk-based products during the festive season, including curd, paneer, chhena and sweets.

The timing of the hike could add to household expenses as demand for dairy products traditionally increases during Ganesh Puja and the festive period. Businesses may also be forced to revise prices to offset the higher cost of raw materials.

The upcoming six-month period will therefore be closely watched by consumers and the dairy industry, particularly as festive demand remains high and milk prices directly influence the cost of several everyday food products.
