In just under two weeks, Indian troops, employing strategic planning and extraordinary courage, forced the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka on December 16, 1971. Around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and civilians laid down their arms, marking one of the largest surrenders in modern military history.

Historical Roots of the Conflict

The conflict traces back to the 1947 partition, when Pakistan was divided into West and East regions, separated by hundreds of miles of Indian territory. Despite the majority population residing in the east, political and economic power remained concentrated in the west.
