The latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) 2023-24 has revealed remarkable progress in digital inclusion among women across India. The survey shows that internet usage among women has nearly doubled over the past few years, reflecting increased access to technology and digital services.

According to the report, the percentage of women using the internet rose from 33.3 percent during 2019-21 to 64.3 percent in 2023-24. The findings indicate a major shift in digital connectivity and access to information among women.

Mobile Phone Ownership Continues to Increase

The survey also highlights a significant rise in mobile phone ownership among women. The proportion of women who own and personally use a mobile phone increased from 53.9 percent in NFHS-5 to 63.6 percent in NFHS-6.

The growth in smartphone and mobile phone access is expected to enhance women’s participation in digital services, online education, healthcare information, and financial transactions.

More Women Managing Their Own Bank Accounts

NFHS-6 points to notable improvements in women’s financial empowerment. The percentage of women who have a bank or savings account that they operate themselves increased from 78.6 percent to 89 percent.

Experts believe that government initiatives promoting financial inclusion, direct benefit transfers, and digital banking services have played a key role in encouraging women to actively manage their finances.

Survey Reflects Progress in Women’s Empowerment

The report suggests that greater access to the internet, mobile phones, and banking services is contributing to women’s social and economic empowerment. Increased digital connectivity is helping women access government schemes, employment opportunities, educational resources, and healthcare services more effectively.

The findings are seen as a positive indicator of narrowing gender gaps in technology adoption and financial participation.

One of India’s Largest Household Surveys

The NFHS-6 survey was conducted during 2023-24 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in collaboration with the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, which served as the nodal agency.

The nationwide survey covered approximately 6.79 lakh households across 715 districts. It provides critical data on population, health, nutrition, family welfare, and socio-economic indicators, supporting evidence-based policymaking and programme implementation at both state and district levels.
