The India Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology have jointly developed the DAMINI mobile app to help protect people from lightning strikes, which claim hundreds of lives in India every year.

40-Minute Advance Lightning Warning

The DAMINI app is designed to monitor lightning activity across the country and send early warnings up to 40 minutes in advance. Using GPS technology, the app alerts users when lightning is likely to occur within a 29–40 km radius of their location.

This advance warning gives people enough time to take shelter and avoid dangerous situations, especially farmers working in fields and people traveling outdoors.

How the DAMINI App Works

Users can easily download the app from the Play Store or App Store and complete a simple registration process. Once activated, the app tracks their location and sends instant alerts when lightning is detected nearby.

The app also features a map-based interface, where users can zoom in to view lightning activity across the country. Different color indicators, such as yellow and blue, are used to show lightning warnings, including alerts that may occur within 10 minutes.

Safety Guidelines and Awareness

In addition to real-time alerts, the DAMINI app also provides important safety guidelines. It educates users about precautions to take during thunderstorms and lightning events, helping reduce risks and save lives.
