First-Ever Odisha State Pain Conference Begins at KIMS

The inaugural Annual Odisha State Pain Conference commenced today at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), marking a major step forward in advancing pain medicine in the state. The two-day scientific meet aims to bring together specialists, clinicians and researchers to discuss the evolving landscape of pain management.

Anaesthesiologists Key to Surgical Success: OUHS Vice-Chancellor

Inaugurating the event, Dr Manas Ranjan Sahoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS), underscored the indispensable role of anaesthesiologists in modern surgery.
“Behind every successful surgeon, there is a good anaesthesiologist,” he remarked.

Dr Sahoo emphasised the critical link between effective pain management and positive surgical outcomes. He announced that OUHS is planning to introduce dedicated courses in pain medicine and also launch PhD programmes for doctors. He encouraged experts to conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions to enhance academic collaboration and clinical skills.

Conference Brings Together Leading Experts

The conference is being jointly organised by the Department of Pain Medicine and the PG Department of Anaesthesiology, KIMS, under the banner of the Indian Society for Study of Pain (ISSP), Bhubaneswar City Branch.
With the theme “Shaping the Future of Pain Medicine in Odisha and Beyond,” the event aims to foster knowledge exchange, promote innovation and strengthen the discipline across the region.

Focus on Holistic and Evidence-Based Pain Care

Dr Amrita Panda, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at KIMS, said the conference will cover all major aspects of pain management.
She noted that the sessions will emphasise holistic, patient-centric and evidence-based approaches to improve clinical outcomes.

‘Phenomenal Response’ from Doctors Across State

Dr Ritish Roy, President of the ISSP Odisha Chapter, described the overwhelming participation as “phenomenal,” reflecting the enthusiasm among doctors statewide to expand their understanding of pain medicine.

Multimodal Approaches Essential, Says KIMS Superintendent

Highlighting the complexity of pain, Prof. M. R. Behera, Medical Superintendent of KIMS, said that effective management requires multimodal interventions, combining physical, psychological and medical strategies.
He added that the conference will delve into the varied dimensions and challenges of pain management.

ISSP National President Advocates Advanced Courses

National President of ISSP, Dr Krishna Poddar, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to strengthening pain medicine in India.
She urged KIMS to initiate a DM course in Pain Management, expressing hope that premier institutes like AIIMS will also introduce specialised programmes in the future.

Growing International Interest in Pain Medicine

Organising Secretary and Consultant in Pain Medicine at KIMS, Dr Rajendra Sahoo, shared that 190 delegates, including participants from Nepal, have registered for the event — a testament to rising global interest.

He further announced that KIMS is prepared to launch fellowship programmes in pain management, reinforcing the institute’s dedication to academic excellence and clinical advancement.
