<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="78" data-end="372">World Elephant Day is being observed today with a renewed focus on elephant conservation and the need to protect one of the world’s most iconic wildlife species. The day aims to spread awareness about elephant protection and encourage collective efforts for their conservation.</p>
<p data-start="374" data-end="534">Odisha is home to more than <strong data-start="402" data-end="421">2,100 elephants</strong>, while special programmes are being organised at the <span class="contents" data-content-reference-start="475" data-content-reference-end="564"><span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Nandankanan Zoological Park</span></span></span> to mark the occasion.</p>
<p data-start="536" data-end="754">This year’s theme is <strong data-start="557" data-end="589">“Conserve, Educate, Inspire”</strong>, highlighting the importance of protecting elephants, educating communities about wildlife conservation and inspiring people to participate in conservation efforts.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="7k6s9a" data-start="756" data-end="811">Human-Elephant Conflict Becomes Increasingly Serious</h2>
<p data-start="813" data-end="940">While conservation remains the central focus of World Elephant Day, Odisha continues to face a serious human-elephant conflict.</p>
<p data-start="942" data-end="1147">According to a special study conducted by the Forest Department, wild elephants are increasingly becoming aggressive and attacking humans despite the availability of adequate food and water inside forests.</p>
<p data-start="1149" data-end="1331">The figures from the past three years highlight the scale of the crisis. During this period, <strong data-start="1242" data-end="1330">443 people lost their lives in elephant attacks across 51 forest divisions in Odisha</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="1333" data-end="1467">The highest number of deaths was reported from the <strong data-start="1384" data-end="1413">Dhenkanal Forest Division</strong>, where <strong data-start="1421" data-end="1434">91 people</strong> were killed in elephant attacks.</p>
<p data-start="1469" data-end="1666">The conflict has also caused extensive damage to homes and agricultural land. As many as <strong data-start="1558" data-end="1597">5,587 houses were partially damaged</strong>, while <strong data-start="1605" data-end="1647">1,050 houses were completely destroyed</strong> during the period.</p>
<p data-start="1668" data-end="1814">Meanwhile, elephant raids have damaged around <strong data-start="1714" data-end="1742">47,499.12 acres of crops</strong>, causing significant economic losses for farmers and rural communities.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="lronk" data-start="1816" data-end="1852">264 Elephants Died in Three Years</h2>
<p data-start="1854" data-end="1983">The concern is not limited to human casualties. Odisha also recorded the deaths of <strong data-start="1937" data-end="1982">264 elephants during the last three years</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="1985" data-end="2113">According to the available data, <strong data-start="2018" data-end="2062">132 elephants died due to natural causes</strong>, while another <strong data-start="2078" data-end="2112">132 died from unnatural causes</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="2115" data-end="2265">The state also recorded the deaths of other wildlife during the same period. These included <strong data-start="2207" data-end="2264">four tigers, 25 leopards and 1,426 other wild animals</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="2267" data-end="2414">Poaching continues to remain a major threat to wildlife conservation. At least <strong data-start="2346" data-end="2390">447 wild animals were killed by poachers</strong>, according to the data.</p>
<h2 data-section-id="yj7jr" data-start="2416" data-end="2447">Over 3,000 Poachers Arrested</h2>
<p data-start="2449" data-end="2612">In a significant enforcement drive against wildlife crimes, authorities arrested <strong data-start="2530" data-end="2546">3,074 people</strong> in connection with alleged poaching activities during the period.</p>
<p data-start="2614" data-end="2786">The figures underline the challenges faced by Odisha in balancing wildlife conservation with the safety and livelihood concerns of communities living close to forest areas.</p>
<p data-start="2788" data-end="2991" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">On World Elephant Day, the growing human-elephant conflict has once again brought the need for stronger conservation measures, better early-warning systems and greater community participation into focus.</p>
