He also dismissed the relevance of the ongoing Waqf-related debates, terming them “irrelevant to the vice presidential race.”

The vice president’s post fell vacant following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation. The Election Commission has already announced the poll schedule, though both the NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc are yet to reveal their candidates. With the BJD’s declaration, political observers are closely watching whether the party will lean towards the opposition or maintain its policy of “equidistance” from both national blocs.

For Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the decision is more than symbolic. Backing the NDA could be seen as a tacit political tradeoff with the BJP, while siding with the INDIA bloc could strengthen the opposition’s numbers and make the BJD a decisive national player. Choosing neutrality, however, might reduce the party’s influence in Delhi’s power corridors.
