The Odisha government will continue the 10-day bagless learning initiative in schools during the 2026-27 academic session in line with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The programme, which was introduced last year, aims to promote stress-free and practical learning among students.

The bagless days are designed to move beyond traditional classroom teaching and provide students with hands-on learning experiences. During these designated days, schools will have the flexibility to organize exposure visits, field trips, and other experiential learning activities under the guidance of teachers and school authorities.

Focus on Practical and Experiential Learning

The initiative is part of the broader NEP vision to reduce academic pressure and encourage activity-based education. Officials said the programme would help students gain real-world exposure and develop practical skills alongside classroom knowledge.

Schools may use the bagless days to conduct visits to industries, farms, local institutions, heritage sites, and other educational destinations that enhance students’ understanding of various subjects.

230 Working Days Fixed for Academic Year

According to the notification issued by the School and Mass Education Department, schools will have a total of 230 working days during the academic year.

As per NEP-2020 guidelines, 20 days have been earmarked for annual functions, cultural events, sports activities, and other co-curricular programmes. After excluding these days, 190 days will be considered as actual instructional days dedicated to classroom teaching and learning.

Revised School Timings Announced

The government has also specified school timings for the upcoming academic session. From Monday to Friday, schools will function from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

On Saturdays, classes will be held from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM, allowing schools to complete academic activities while taking weather conditions and student convenience into consideration.

The continuation of the bagless learning initiative reflects the state’s commitment to implementing the National Education Policy and creating a more engaging, student-centric education system focused on holistic development.
