The New Year celebrations in Bhubaneswar saw a massive surge in alcohol consumption, as residents welcomed 2026 with parties, clubbing, and late-night festivities. According to data from the Excise Department, liquor sales in the city between December 25 and 31 reached an unprecedented ₹32.55 crore, more than double the usual weekly sales of around ₹14 crore.

Clubs, Bars, and Off-Sales Drive the Surge

The spike in sales was primarily driven by clubs, pubs, bars, and off-sale shops, with foreign liquor accounting for the largest share. Approximately 2.5 lakh liters of foreign liquor were sold, generating revenue of ₹28.04 crore. Beer sales followed, with 1.78 lakh liters sold, contributing ₹3.56 crore. Sales of domestic liquor were comparatively lower, with 1.5 lakh liters bringing in ₹0.94 crore.

Record-Breaking Liquor Consumption During Festive Week

In total, over 4 lakh liters of liquor were consumed in Bhubaneswar during the festive week, spanning Christmas to New Year’s Eve. Zero-night packages and party bookings in many clubs were reportedly sold out days in advance, reflecting the city’s growing party culture and celebratory mindset.

Economic Significance and Social Concerns

While the surge in alcohol sales represents a boost to the state’s revenue, authorities have also raised concerns regarding public health and safety. The Excise Department continues to enforce strict monitoring, seizing illegal liquor and running anti-alcohol campaigns during the festive season.
