The Central Government has appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier domestic intelligence agency. Dixit will succeed Tapan Deka, whose extended tenure as IB chief will conclude on June 30.

The appointment of Dixit has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will take charge of the agency for a period of two years.

Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as a Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. He has extensive experience in intelligence operations, internal security management, and counter-terrorism activities.

From Doctor to IPS Officer

Before joining the Indian Police Service, Mahesh Dixit was a doctor. Over the years, he has gained significant expertise in handling complex security challenges and intelligence operations.

Prior to his appointment as Special Director in the IB, Dixit headed the sensitive Kashmir Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, where he played a key role in maintaining security and law and order in the Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370.

He has also handled several important assignments related to regional security threats, including operations in the Northeast, Ladakh, and anti-Naxal activities.

Deka’s Tenure Ends After Extensions

Tapan Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the IB Director in 2022. His tenure was extended twice for one year each.

During his leadership, the Intelligence Bureau continued to focus on counter-terrorism, internal security, and intelligence coordination with various security agencies and police forces.

The Intelligence Bureau plays a crucial role in collecting and analysing information related to terrorism, insurgency, security threats, and challenges affecting national interests, while supporting other agencies in maintaining internal security.
