Formation of Low-Pressure Region

Forecasters predict the formation of a low-pressure region over the Bay of Bengal around September 25–26. This system is expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall across Odisha, affecting both coastal areas and interior districts during the first days of Durga Puja.

IMD Expert Comments

Dr. Surendranath Pasupalak, senior scientist at the IMD, stated:
“This system over the northern and central Bay of Bengal may cause widespread rain from September 26. Southern Odisha could experience heavier showers.”

Impact on Durga Puja Celebrations

Heavy rainfall is likely to continue during Shashthi and Saptami, the sixth and seventh days of Durga Puja, which fall on September 28 and 29. However, the weather is expected to clear the day after the festival, allowing festivities to resume normally.

Movement and Duration of the System

The low-pressure system may gradually move westward, affecting western Odisha and extending toward Chhattisgarh and Nagpur by September 29. While rainfall may persist, its intensity is expected to decrease by September 30 as dry air returns.

Dr. Pasupalak noted that although rain may not be extremely intense, it could disrupt outdoor events and festival processions during the initial days. The final location and strength of the system will become clearer by September 21.

Current Weather and IMD Monitoring

Currently, most areas in Odisha are experiencing dry weather. However, the situation may change once the low-pressure system develops. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring the system and will release timely bulletins as the weather evolves.
